How much does everyone pay for rent?
« on: January 07, 2008, 02:08:18 PM »
I suppose pertcentage of income.  We are looking to move to a bigger place and my hubby is reluctant to pay what everyone is expecting.

I realize his expectations are out of whack, but I was just wondering what people pay and is it based on both your incomes or just one person's?

I also realize that Cambridge is stupidly expensive, although not as expensive as London, so maybe percentage of income will help me make sense of it all.

We've just bought a place but were renting before.  It was £500 per month for a one bedroom flat, that was in Inverness, Scotland which I would imagine is below the UK average.

We will be paying less than 1/5th of our duel income in housing.  We will be living in Northamptonshire and this is for a 3 bedroom newer build house with a garden and garage.  A lovely house at that!

We are a one income family and almost about 40% of it (net income) goes on our rent but it is a very nice, spacious 3 bedroom bungalow in a good area of Inverness.  In Canterbury we paid a similar rent for a small 2 bedroom cottage.

Our mortgage payment (3 bed semi new build) is 20% of our combined net monthly incomes.  We were renting until two years ago and the percentage was the same (2 bed 30s semi).  We're in Newcastle upon Tyne.

We have a mortgage too, and we're currently a one-income family (for the majority of the time!)

Mortgage for a 3-bed semi, garden, garage etc in Glasgow is just over 25% of my income
Mortgage for the 1-bed tenemant flat in Edinburgh city centre (before we moved) was 10% of my income.

I've always heard that in general you can afford to pay in rent what you make in one week. With that in mind 25% or 1/4 would be a close estimation. Hope that helps

Approximately 40% of our dual income (I approximated what our take-home is after taxes, so would need to double check that). Definitely not an ideal situation, but about as well as we can do at this point, living in London.

600 pcm for a three bed terrace (3rd bedroom being of the "hahahahaha is that really a bedroom?" variety)
Newish, clean comfy, cheap utilities, close to town and amenities....
With council tax, it is 1/3 of our income.....ridiculous

Technically 370 pounds/week for a 2br house in Chiswick.  (Oh, yeah, the ads said this was a 3br, too.)

The technically bit comes from the fact that the company would pay the rent.  But the owner hasn't sent an invoice for 10 months.  So, free house!!??

Approximately 20% of our dual income goes towards rent for a posh 2 bedroom flat overlooking the water in Lancashire.  That, of course, does not include utilities.

£500/month for a 3-bed house in Belfast. And that includes rates (aka council tax). Admittedly it's not a particularly nice house, and it's on the A1 in the middle of a commercial district...

It's about 20% of our net dual income. During grad school we spent about 50% of our income on rent, so this feels luxurious!

Just under £1000 a month for a 2 bedroom terrace house with a garden in South Buckinghamshire. But we're being ripped off because we have a posh postcode.  ::) We are going to start looking for something closer to the £800 mark a bit further out from London or possibly around the Bucks/Oxon boarder....
