LOL - just got my Tx license, what a joke!
« on: January 07, 2008, 06:47:25 PM »
Now that DH and I have settled in Dallas, TX, one of my first jobs here was to get my US license, so I had to re-take my US driving test this morning. Now, I went through h*ll getting my UK license, 7 months of driver training and taking the test 3 times to pass. Here in the grand state of Texas, I took the written portion (about 10min) and passed easily without studying. Then, came back this morning at the crack of dawn to stand in line for the test, there are no appts, first come first served. The officer regonized my northern accent, which I thought was funny. Anyway, the hardest part was waiting.

The examiner was in the car for not even 10min, she checked my turn signals, brakes and horn that they worked, then drove off and took a few turns (left and right), changed lanes, reversed for about 5 feet and parallel parked, but didn't finish and I passed. And I was nervous for some reason!

And I wonder why the driving is so crazy here? I really miss the civility of the british motorway, for the most part, the driving is a little more sane in the UK.

LOL! I remember getting my Louisiana license for the first time back when I was a teenager. I didn't even have to reverse or park! Just start the car, drive forward a bit, turn left, left and left again until we were back where we started ... and that was it! It took all of 5 minutes!

I took my driving test in Texas on my 16th birthday...I remember having do do a three point turn and park in an empty parking lot, but that was about the most difficult it got.  They never tested me on parallel parking, thank god.

Congratulations on your license, even if it was effortless, but maybe that is just your brains and talent shining through!

Well done on passing your test! I agree with you completely, there is something to be said when you simply indicate and the other drivers slow down and let you in...some of them even flash you with their lovely little flashing lights. I love it. Very civilised!

I just came back from 2 1/2 weeks in the US, and I could not get over how awful so many of the drivers were. So much worse than I even remember. It seems that no one ever indicates, and I was almost backed into twice in the same parking lot. It definitely made me appreciate the driving over here, although I'm still dreading my test.

Sounds like mine, but they were right turns, nothing so complicated as a left hand turn!  And then just parking in an empty parking lot to finish the test.

I think it is easier in the US because they don't have the manpower to retest everyone that fails.  Could you imagine if it was like the UK?  The DMV is already packed most of the time.  My wife passed in 5 minutes.

OH I got to disagree, I think driving over here is manic!!  People offensively drive, drive to close to each other, don't actually do what they are supposed to at roundabouts, pull out in front of cars because they need to get into the other lane so they think it's ok to block a lane of traffic from moving to do this, etc. And don't get me started on motorcyclists!! It's every man for himself on the roads here. That is what scares me about driving in Britain!! Oh, for the peace and politeness of the wide open roads in the states....

Yeah I think so too even though I haven't drivin in the UK yet.  Although when my inlaws were here they said that there are too many lanes in Texas and they don't know how I manage.
