Hugh's Chicken Run, etc.
« on: January 07, 2008, 07:42:20 PM »
Anyone going to watch these Channel 4 specials with HFW, Jamie and Gordon?

(PS I put this in Food rather than A, M & E since it's so food based)
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I saw a promo for Jamie Oliver's show, and to be honest and not sanctimonious, if you're going to eat meat, you know that it's ultimately going to be unpleasant for the animal involved. If Jamie Oliver really cares how chickens or any other "edible" animals are raised, it doesn't matter, because they're ultimately going to be slaughtered against their will, and he's going to continue to eat them. I think he's a hypocrite.

I saw the trailer for this and I think it is wonderful!

I don't eat meat mainly for the reasons that Jamie is trying to highlight - the way that these animals are kept before slaughter are cruel beyone belief.  It is almost impossible to stop people from eating meat, but if we (or he) can get a few thousand to move to organically reared free range animals then it can only be a good thing.  If animals have to be bred for food, then they should have good, happy, healthy lives before a quick, humane slaughter.

Well, I'm not vegetarian but I feel very strongly that industrial farming is appalling. I can't afford to shop the way I want to now, but it is a very important goal for DH and myself to reach when our finances improve. I'm going to watch these shows, but I worry that they will probably make me veg until DH gets a proper job!!!

That's true, Vicky. That would be a good first step. But considering Jamie O. doesn't seem that concerned about how other animals used for meat (especially calves/veal) are treated, I think he's just out to make more pounds for hosting a TV show.

Does he not? I don't think that's the case at all. Most veal produced in the UK now is humane - not like what was going on in the 80s and 90s. Where are you getting your info anyway? Most of these celebrity chefs are big fans of all their meat being humanely raised/slaughtered, and preferrably locally.

I think it's commonly accepted that chickens are some of the worst treated animals, followed closely by pigs. Hence the focus on them.

I know. But I do really like meat. We do a lot of veg meals though. Mom lived in S India for a while, so lots of veggie curries! I guess what I was trying to say is that when we can afford to, we'll buy the organic/free range meat... but we're never going to be a meat every day family!!

But if you are going to eat meat, going organic is more expensive!

I have managed to convince a few friends/boyfriends (including Dan, who has no choice ;D) that to eat non free range chicken or pigs is accepting of animal cruelty.  I am away tonight so he will be at home cooking lamb which has been gamboling around the fields...

It is so frustrating how organic is so expensive.  I guess it won't be more reasonable until there is enough demand for it.  It depresses me how it is so much easier to save money if you eat crap food.  :-\\\\

Yes, I know it's more expensive. That's why when we are better off financially, we'll happily spend that money on better quality. Right now we spend it when we can. But we have bought standard stuff now and then because neither of us do well on a strictly veg diet. I'm not proud of that, but there it is.

I know it's not quite the same as meat, but there are some amazingly good meat substitutes out there, if you're only inclined to look.

I don't so well on a strictly veg diet, which is why I eat fish, and why I try not to get preachy to meat eaters.  I'm certainly not minted, and I know that not all of us can afford to be as ethical as we'd like.  But I would say to those who'd like to be more ethical about this but still want to eat meat, stick to fish, lamb and beef where possible, as even the non organically reared animals have comparatively better lives.

True. We don't eat much chicken these days.

We're in the same boat as you, balmerhon. Trying to save money, but do enjoy eating meat (especially DH) and only buy organic/free range. One thing we do is buy cheaper cuts of meat to offset the cost of organic a bit. We make a lot of slow-cooked dishes anyway, so those cuts are often preferable to us.
