Found: White albacore tuna

You won't believe this but I saw some at Poundstretcher today. I didn't buy any this time because I've just ordered some online but I thought I'd let everyone know about it. The brand is Princes so it might be available in other shops as well. I think it was £1.99 for 2 or 3 small cans, can't remember exactly. Oh and it was in sunflower oil.

What's the difference between this and regular tinned tuna?  Is it sustainable?  I abstain from Tuna because they are overfished but is this different?  I miss tuna :(

Thanks for the link, the article seems kind of undecided as to whether or not it is sustainable.

This bit made me laugh though,

"The Marine Stewardship Council advises that Albacore from the south Atlantic and south Pacific are fished at sustainable levels, but recommends choosing line (hand-line or pole and line) or troll-caught fish."

Trolls catch fish now?   ???  Do they mean trawl?

I bought some white albacrore tuna recently and found it was really bland and tasted of nothing. It was Chicken of the Sea brand from Costco. I actually prefer the kind you get here in the UK, at least it has some flavour.

Just thought I'd let you know I tried the Princes albacore and it's very nice! Mild flavour, unlike the US one that I got online - Bumblebee brand which states it is white albacore but honestly tastes more like Tesco value.

Very cool.  I wish I had seen this before.  Mr. Moggs has no clue why I retch when I am making him tuna salad.  I tried to explain to him about cat food in the US being made from that sort of tuna (and how it gives me flashbacks to the late 80s/early 90s commercial for Food Stamps where the old lady eats the cat food because she has no other food to eat).

Going to check this out.

Good news! I actually never really liked Bumblebee tuna, even in the US. I'm a Starkist girl. But I'm definitely willing to try out the Prince stuff - except that I looked in my Tesco and it's not there. I'm hoping they'll stock it sooner or later.
