Congrats, salsboo!  :)

Congrats! It isn't worth my mental health and the safety of the British people AND I don't have hundreds of Pounds to spend on "lessons". Having driven since I was 16 in America, I find after living here for eleven years, I still "don't get it" when it comes to roundabouts and other such evil things. I'll continue to be a thorn in the side of everyone and keep my American license thank you very much!

Yeah, it can be quite expensive because you would have to be quite skilled and lucky to pass the first time around (theory and practical), but if you ever decide to give it another try, here's a tip from my partner that I found very useful:

If you are making a right turn, get on the right lane, otherwise keep to the left lane for all other turns. Start signalling left as soon as you pass the turning/exit before the exit you want to take. Give way to the right before entering the roundabout. I actually find them to be quite easy and I now get very irritated when I have to stop at a traffic light lol. I think roundabouts are a lot more confusing and seem more daunting in theory than in practice.

Also, I found this video to be very helpful: How to deal with roundabouts: Driver training for Indians (He also has the best video/tip on parallel parking imho)

How do you "keep" your American license? I thought you only had 1 year & then you MUST have a UK license to keep driving?

I've read recently on the forums that in the UK they ask you for your US drivers license but I don't think you have to give it to them. I don't encourage lying but if you don't have it you don't have it.
Like you I need the US license for when I got back and drive in the US.

Jim and Momof2, you don't give up your US license to get one here.  Some countries will transfer the license over, but ours isn't one of them.  You have to start from scratch as if you've never driven, which is why you still have your US license--you never give it to anyone to get the UK one.

You don't encourage lying, but you suggest that people should lie? I don't quite get the logic of that. It is an offence to fail to produce the licence under which you purport to be driving when requested to do so by a police officer.

Just updating...

I am 56 years old, American. Have been driving (in the States) for 40+ years. My British husband and I moved to the UK last August. I started taking driving lessons through the AA in February. £29/hour. I've had, hmm, probably 20-25 hrs behind the wheel now in lessons but absolutely NO private driving experience between lessons. (Long story a/k/a a$$hole husband).

Anyway, I passed my Theory Exam first time, and now tomorrow morning I'll be taking my Practical Exam.

As I sit here tonight typing this, I'm not nervous at all. Hope I still feel that way at 10.24 tomorrow morning! Am meeting my instructor at 9am for a bit of a warm-up drive.

I feel immense pressure - all brought on by myself, of course - to pass. Mother-in-law: "I'm sure you'll do just fine. I took 10 lessons and passed the first time." Right, but, er, um, that was in 1732.  ;D

Will give y'all an update tomorrow.

P.S. Well, okay, I'm a bit nervous.  :-\\\\

Thanks for the good wishes everyone: but I did not pass - although I had a brilliant drive.  Only 2 minor faults (you are allowed 15) but towards the end of the exam I screwed up at a Y-junction and the examiner marked it a 'serious fault' of which you are allowed, of course, ZERO.

So, I'll pick meself back up, dust meself off, and try again. Another £62 ... another £80 (that's how much my instructor charges to use his car for the exam!) - and the earliest date to rebook isn't until end of September.
