I've never been asked how much I make while I'm in the UK. I've had tons of people in the UK ask me who I voted for in the last US presidential election. I just told them that it was seen as something private and not something you just go around asking people.

I was stunned during the last US election, by how many people asked me how I was going to vote.  And by strangers...the guy at the post office when I went to pick up a package from my mother, taxi drivers and a potential client.  I just smiled (grimaced, really) and told them I hadn't made up my mind yet.  I have never had anyone in the US ask me that.

I don't mind disclosing how much money I make- it's not a big deal to me.
How much money u make? ;D        Don't answer!
I'm jealous about the amount of money people make in the UK. I realise the income is offset by the high cost of everything overthere. I also realise that money isn't the end all.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but what I noticed about the UK is that people here are more likely to say things like "I'm skint until payday" , in the states (from what I noticed anyway)  you dont admit things like that.
They don't say that in the States because it is always assumed. ;D

I never want to know how much someone makes or reveal what I make. I had a few nasty experiences at my first (low-paid) job out of college, where someone would be complaining about how much they made and mention the number. I always made less than other people, even when I had been their longer and had a higher position (I stupidly stayed at this job for 7 years, so I was basically running the place when I left and still making criminally low pay). It really upset me, and when I tried to leverage for a raise based on what others made, I was told I'd be fired if it was learned I'd discussed salary with others.

I learned to keep mum and negotiate better before taking a job, which led to a $14,000 raise for my next job -- I refused to tell the interviewer how much I made, too, telling them to just make me their best offer. It's a good thing I did that, because I later found out, again not by asking or wanting to know, that another co-worker in my same position who came in three months earlier than me made $10,000 less. I'm glad I never revealed my salary, because I would've been the one making so much it pissed others off!
