Strangely missing the UK, even the weather!
« on: January 10, 2008, 02:33:09 PM »
Okay, don't shoot me, but the weather is great here and I find myself somehow missing the weather in the UK, the predictability of the grey days in the winter. Here in Tx, the weather is up and down, sunny, cloudy, warm/cold etc... very different from the UK. Trust me, I like it. I just miss the UK and the familiarity I had there, the worst part is, I really got to know my neighbors and like them just as we were going! I mean, I will probably make it a point to go and see them when we're there to visit sometime in 2009 (seems sooooo far away). I know it takes time to readjust, and it will be easier for me than DH, but culture shock goes both ways  :\\\'( strange as that sounds. I also miss the UK news, thank goodness I can get that online. Oh and thank God we have BBCamerica for a dose of british accent when I miss it.

A funny story - I was at 7 Eleven the other night getting a bottle of wine (we are in a dry county and had to drive a ways to find alcohol) and they carded me. I showed him my UK drivers license and my paper Texas temporary drivers license, he didn't want to believe me that I was over 21, which just cracked me up. They think the UK license isn't valid here since they haven't seen it.  ::) Gotta love it. I got the wine inthe end and good thing, I hadn't had any in a week! Stupid dry counties. :P

I experienced everything you're saying.  It's a lot harder than you think.  I'll go through times where i'm 100% happy with our choice.....and then others where i"m not and questioning.  It's a process. I've been back 9.5 months and most days it's the best thing i ever done. It's those 4 or 5 days i've had in those months that made me say WHY?! that are the hardest :(

I love BBC America. It is my lifeline.

I am in London for ONE night this month, on a stop over from Budapest and I am excited beyond BELIEF.

The same is true for us! We are even watching shows that we never watched in the UK just to get our Brit fix. I really miss UK TV! I also miss the countryside. I don't miss the weather at all.

That said, I have not had any adjustment problems being back. I am loving the ease of American life. :)

You know Jules, when i have my bad days my husband says it right. For us, i miss the LIFE we had. The amazing little top floor flat in an upscale part of the city. The weekly farmers market a 2 min walk away. Pubs on every corner. The little shops and bars and the city vibe.  it was our first home, and I think that's what makes me miss it most. Look I am getting teary typing this!

I am in London for that one night and I'm going to go to my old flat and stand outside and i bet you I will BAWL LIKE A BABY.

But I love my american life 100%! It's just I think I miss the life we had there even though this life is amazing too. :)

I have to agree with this Aimiloo :) I agree, it's the life we had. It's my Pilates business and the feeling of freedom knowing the area, running my own schedule etc... I will get that again here, just takes time. I also miss the people, his family and our friends. I feel so lucky to have the internet so we can keep in touch so easily.

Oh but some of us still want you to be actually over here! :-*
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in...

That's one thing I didn't miss about Chicago.  The winters here can be terrible.  Even though I grew up here I will never get used to them.   Come on Spring!

You are not alone!  I SO wanted to move back here because life in the UK was difficult for me yet there are days when I find myself thinking "I really wish I was in the UK right now".  Not too long ago, I was actually looking up rentals in North London!  Insane!

I used to say I would NEVER move back to the UK and now we talk about maybe moving back in a few years.  That's all crazy talk though.  I think we both just miss some aspects of life in the UK and that will always be the case.

Best of luck to you!

June
