UPS Freight Service
« on: January 12, 2008, 07:51:16 AM »
Has anyone used the freight service offered by UPS?  I was at the UPS store the other day dropping off a box and saw a leaflet about their freight service they offer for household moves.  The leaflet said they offer truck, air, or ocean freight.
I'll be moving from the Philadelphia area to the UK this summer so I spoke to the manager at the UPS store about the leaflet, but unfortunately, he didn't know anything about the service and asked me to give him a call back.  We've been playing phone tag for about a week now, so I have no information still.  Just wondering if any of you either used this service, or at least got a quote from them so I can have an idea about the cost.  I've already been in contact with a few other moving companies and had been leaning toward UPak, but if I can go with a company I know and trust like UPS, all the better.

During one of my attempts to reach the UPS guy, I was speaking with another worker there and she was telling me that if I do ship boxes with them, I have to provide a detailed packing list of everything inside the boxes.  Ok, fair enough, I totally expected that.  But then she said that if I had a box of clothing for example, I would have to describe each garment in precise detail and indicate where it was made and what the fabric was made out of.  She also said for my shipment of books, that I would have to include a list of title and author of all the books in the shipment.  :o  Is she kidding me?  I knew I would have to be specific on customs forms and such, but such fine detail?  I nearly fainted when I heard this.  When I think about all the articles of clothing my family and I have and the number of books, my head spins.

Has anyone else had to do this?

Thanks

Brigette

I moved 8 boxes via UPS in the summer of 2006 and I am fairly certain they can only send air packages overseas, they told me that the sea freight wasn't an option. It was very expensive, almost $4000 I believe. I had to document every single thing, like the person told you, and add a value to it. It was a pain. Once it got here I had to fill out forms so I didn't have to pay VAT on it, even though it was mainly used clothing. We sent a 12 pound box in October via UPS and it cost us $180. It is not cheap.

I sent 10 boxes (total of 400 pounds) via regular UPS airmail in Nov. 2006, and it worked out to $3/pound including insurance. They should group all your boxes together and charge you for the total weight of all the boxes, rather than charging for each box separately. The advantage is that the price per pound goes down dramatically as the weight goes up.

I had a detailed packing list of all the contents of the boxes, but it certainly didn't itemize each piece of clothing or book titles and authors. That shouldn't be necessary for a shipment of used household goods for personal use. There are forms you can fill out before shipping the stuff so that you don't have to pay customs or VAT--you may have to track them down and fill them out yourself, as the UPS store probably doesn't have experience with them. For that reason, take what they say with a grain of salt, and do your own research. ;)

Wow, I am impressed with how cheap the pp got their packages sent, I clearly got ripped off :) Do your research and make sure that you have all the right forms filled out because they did cause a delay in me receiving my boxes when I had to fill out the forms to avoid the VAT.

Good luck!

Thanks for your input guys.  I really appreciate it.  It is clear that the folks at the UPS store have no idea about this freight service.  But the leaflet says they can ship your household goods via ocean freight.  Perhaps there is a minimum amount they require for this service?  Who knows?
At any rate, I don't like the idea of having to describe my items in such detail or having to track down which customs forms I need and such.  Especially since the folks at UPS won't be able to offer me much help.  I suppose I'll look for shipping services elsewhere.
