Agreed. One could just as easily make a comparison to music copying or software piracy, which many, many people find acceptable despite the fact that they are also illegal.

Right.  Innocent people getting killed or maimed by somebody burning a CD?    ::)

 ;D  I like a snappy comeback.   ;D

Seriously, if there's a strong sentiment in UKY about the transferability of US driving permits for periods of longer than 1 year (and the sentiment comes from people who are generally honest and law-abiding), then we can take it up when the Advocacy Team meets with American Consular Services later this month.

I don't know what they would say, or what is possible to be done about it.  Or even if they would be interested in such a topic.  But I have no qualms about making representations or high-level enquiries.

Probably involves getting the US to agree to a reciprocal agreement.

Which is unlikely I'd think given it's state law and not national law.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Probably involves getting the US to agree to a reciprocal agreement.

Or making some other concession, or etc etc.

But if there's strong sentiment, I certainly don't mind making representations.  After the main business of the meeting gets completed of course.

Do you not get a strong sense of sentiment from this thread?  ;D

The sentiment in this thread is polarized on the issue of whether it's ok to break the law, and *NOT* on the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of using advocacy to do something about it.

I'd say that any advocacy would be welcomed. It is well know what a headache the whole ordeal is. I doubt you would lack support.

You might be surprised on that one.  Immigrants who go native can be the most resistant to change - based upon the rationale of "I suffered, so why shouldn't you?".  That's true everywhere.  Even stateside.   ;)

Well, I suffered, but I would welcome advocacy!  :)

In terms of driving permits, I suffered more than anybody here.  Long story.

Anyway, if there's interest in measuring sentiment, then get a poll started in the advocacy area.  And then advertise it because otherwise people won't see it.

They might be nationalizing driver's licenses in the U.S. for all those under 50 (I believe it affects under 50's).  Some states have said yes, some said no.  It is not ready to go at all.

The ACLU is against it because it will basically be a national id card.  The government wants it so no one can have more than one license/fighting terrorism.

I think it will be waste of money and time.

If you read it another way, this is more about standardizing licenses across the states which would allow agencies (police, etc) to access your records... which I equate to something like a passport. For driving and security purposes this makes sense. However, for bars that swipe your licenses or shops etc etc yeah that will create a big brother effect I am not too keen on.
