Chile to remake The Office
« on: January 15, 2008, 02:59:11 PM »
Chili is remaking a version of The Office: http://www.chortle.co.uk/news/2008/01/14/6259/the_office_goes_to_chile

It says in that article that France and Germany have also remade versions. Does anyone know where you can see dubbed versions of those? I think it would be highly interesting to see their take on the show.

I've already seen the original The Office and recently started watching the American version. We love it!

I know the French version is on DVD, but I don't think it has any dubbing on it. I just quickly looked at Amazon and it doesn't mention any subtitling or alternative language tracks. I'm not sure about the German version.

I can't recall offhand all the details, but I know for sure that the first episode of Le Bureau is a direct translation of the Gervais/Merchant script of episode 1.1, just like the first episode of The Office (US) is a slight edit of that same script.

Slate did an article about this.  Over a year and a half ago.  How is it I still remember this?

If anybody does find fully dubbed versions of these, please let me know. I don't care how expensive it might be. It's easier than translating everything myself.

Even if I don't write about all the versions in my dissertation, I do need to have watched them.

Thanks for the link! That was a well-done article and even had clips of the French and German office. I especially liked why the writer preferred the American version of the show to the Brit version; she sums of the difference between American and  Brit attitudes:

"But, more subtly, the base-line mood of David Brent's workplace—resignation mingled with self-loathing—is unrecognizably alien to our (well, my) sensibility. In the American office, passivity mingles with rueful hopefulness: An American always believes there's something to look forward to. A Brit does not, and finds humor in that hopelessness. What truths, I wondered, might Le Bureau and Stromberg reveal about the French and German professional milieus?"
