Question about where to find WWII type food(was.. Where can I get ..)
« Reply #15 on: January 15, 2008, 10:08:11 PM »
No....NOT cubes..they are RECTANGULAR...Dimensions are 3cm x 2cm x 1cm....I beleive they are "domino sugar tablets" as described in the link...To which I have emailed but they don't ship to here...Meaning to individuals...Like me, and presumably, you... ;)

One doesn't get them in our supermarkets here in the UK...One does get CUBES, but NOT rectangulars as I have described...

I am asking if anyone on this website knows if there are any shops here in the UK that specialise in U.S foodstuffs where I can get them?

Um.  No.  I think with such a specialized request you'd be better off starting a new topic and explaining EXACTLY what you're looking for as none of us are mind-readers.  Although I don't think we have any WWII reenactors either, although I could be wrong.  I'm afraid I wouldn't hold out much hope for success.

There are a whole lot of webistes like that listed in this thread you could check out but I can't say I've ever seen any of these sugar domino thingies.

Also, if you're looking for foods for WW2 re-enacting, have you tried the Imperial War Museum shop? They might have some of the things you're after.

Canned cheese these days is generally used only by restaurants/fast food/catering. It's the kind of stuff you might get on 'nachos' at the ball park or something. That's why it comes in such big cans. I thought one of the Mexican cheeses came in a can (Rotello or something like that?) but obviously that wouldn't be WW2 authentic!

As for the bacon, I suspect (frankly I hope!!! ;)) that is something that is no longer produced at all.

As for the sugar, just get the stuff shipped to one of your US friends and have them send it over. A lot of us do that on here!

pal, you're the one who originally said CUBES, so don't get narky just because you cant explain yourself properly!  ;)

I think the sugar tablets/rectangular (cubes) are these ....

Good luck finding what you're after.

No one here knows, but after googling for three seconds I found this

Why don't you ask the experts?

This may have been mentioned already but I found tinned black beans in Tesco yesterday and promptly bought out the remaining supply there.  I found them in the World section, not the lentils area. They're called Epicure and are organic as well so found in the organic section of the World section... if that makes sense.

They carry those at Waitrose too. In the normal tinned bean section!  :D

ETA: oops, apologies - didn't read far enough to see that someone else already posted that!  :)

Ration technologies , quite frankly, they're sh...t...sorry to be so blunt... :(

Thanks for the help though...

I do apologise, but I am sure I said rectangular cubes, wrong terminology adding the "cubes", oh well, never mind..Sorry for seeming to mislead you:

"I think the sugar tablets/rectangular (cubes) are these ; http://www.dominosugar.com/products/dotsTablets.asp [nofollow] "

For a better idea of the kind of "cubes"...

Since first posting this, I have contacted someone in the U.S and she has heard of them (Domino Sugar) and will go and get some for me, however, it would be easier of I could get them in the UK... ;)... I think their main office is in Baltimore, Maryland...But could be wrong...

I wasn't getting narky, just highlighting wot I was and was not after... ;)

Ye see, many foodstuffs these days are the very same as 60 years ago, some in similar packaging, some not, most have the exact ingredients I am after, some similar...The things I mentioned I cannot get here (other items I have found - canned roast beef, canned jam, cornbeef hash, irish stew etc...)...Or rather haven't located (yet), with your help, I was hoping you guys would know of any shops here in the UK, or in or near London where they import the items I am asking...

Anyway, thank you for your help, I have been pointed in several directions, not helped much, but that is not down to you guys...Ye done yer best...Again, thanks... ;D..And if you ever happen to come accross the rectangular (cubish) type compressed granulated sugar lumps, then let me know... 8)

Domino sugar is processed in Baltimore (and maybe other cities as well?). You could try just contacting them directly to see if they can sell/ship some to you. Given your unique interest in it, they might oblige. I think it highly unlikely that something as ubiquitous as sugar would be exported to the UK when they have their own sugar industry.

I did find some sort of Kraft canned cheese when I googled it.

http://www.internet-grocer.net/cheese.htm

But again, you'd probably need to have it sent to someone in the US and then on to you.

As for the bacon, you're on your own there! Blech!

Don't forget your bully beef and powdered egg! And use your gravy browning to draw a stocking seam up the back of your leg.

As an American I'm looking at these rations and thinking "Wow, glad I don't have to live on those!"  Then I'm remembering that the British were actually jealous of American servicemen's rations during WWII.  How bad (or how scarce) must their food have been?  :o

Seamed stockings... ;D

I have asked them, they haven't obliged...On my travel's (in a virtual sense) someone told me he saw the type of sugar "tablets" I am after in a hotel near him, but he hasn't got back to me...I think you are rihgt, I am on a false run trying to get them here, but "ye never know"... ;)

Kraft Cheese?..Yeah, they did sell it at Asda, but it is slightly bigger than what I was after (that didn't bother me thouhg, as I always use the "to dialogue") I bought it and took it to an event, it gave me a headache.. ::).Must have WAY too much preservatives in it...

I have an orignal powdered egg can, and will be reporoducing it for my displays, ye can get powdered eggs in Asda, but it's expensive, and I wouldn't eat it (meant to be ghastly)...

Bully beef, yeah, ye can get that anywhere, I remove the wrapper/label, and just paste on a 1940's Libby's label (reproduced)...

I do apologise if I have hijacked your guys thread, but I find this interesting, the comparisons with foodstuffs...Let's not forget, we didn't have Spam until the U.S introduced it during the War....Then theres wrigleys gum...Corned beef hash...I'm sure I cold find more if I thought about it... ;)

Is it any wonder that British women ran off with the American GIs - stockings and chocolate! :D

My mother was one of eight pretty sisters living in a village near a base. They were very popular. But they didn't run off with the Americans - just used them for the stockings and chocolates. Then they ran off with British officers.  ;)
