Good thread because we're off to Bath (first time for both of us) for a long weekend next weekend - Steve's birthday gift to me this year (I got the train tickets in a card on my birthday).

Any updates on restaurants, places, events, etc in Bath?

I'm hoping it won't be absolutely teeming with people, but knowing this time of year - it probably will, so I am preparing myself!

We're venturing south, for a change - lol! ;)

It's going to be manic, so prepare yourselves! We locals like to stay out of the city on weekends during the summer if at all possible.  ;)

And I have to disagree with Blondshania about the cinnamon buns. That's my favorite flavor! But, I'm sure the place will be packed and that's no fun. There's a nice French restaurant on that same street (I mentioned it earlier in this thread and I still can't remember the name!).

The Hop Pole pub across from Victoria Park is a good place for a Sunday roast.

The National Trust has a Skyline Walk that starts up by the University of Bath. If you go to the tourist information center they should have brochures for it. It's nothing like you and Steve are used to, but you do get to see at least one of the famous follies around the city and the views are spectacular.

You could walk or cycle along the canal towards Bathampton and stop at the pub out there.

You could take a day trip to Bradford on Avon where there are quaint shops and such.

You could get the free bus to Dyrham Park (where they filmed Remains of the Day) if you like that kind of thing. We ended up taking a taxi out and getting the free bus back.Otherwise you're stuck out there all day. It was 10 quid each to tour the house, but we both thought it was worth it.

Bath is on the Cotswold Way, so you could walk some of that.

The Old Green Tree is a tiny little pub, but if you're lucky enough to get a table the food is excellent!

There's a new Greek restaurant next to the Parade Bridge that I'm dying to try. It's called Opa. If you go, let me know!

There's a free walking tour that runs everyday and starts in front of the Pump Room. I believe it starts at 10am and possibly another one at 2pm during the summer. It's excellent and I highly recommend it. I've done it a few times with guests and I always learn something new. It runs for 2 hours and you can always leave it if you want to.

There's a tourist center in one of the squares next to the Abbey where you can find out more info on all of this.

Have fun!  :)

If you're interested in day trips from Bath as well, I can recommend this tour company. We stayed in Bath for 4 days and we had a wonderful time on one of their tours.

Oohh..we were there a few weeks ago with relatives....There is a pavilion in the park that sometimes has music playing and you can hire a deck chair and sit back and listen with a bottle of wine...and there is THE BEST FUDGE SHOP EVER!  tucked right in the corner down a little alley next to a coffee shop ( could be costa) opposite the Roman baths..they make the fudge in the shop. TRY RUM RAISIN !!! its the best! mmnn  :P I think the shop is called the fudge factory..it has a green shop front.

We went by train and had a easy time getting there.

That fudge shop is called The San Francisco Fudge Factory!  I've spoke with the owners before, very nice people and really good fudge!  They left SF after our big quake in 89.

There is also a fantastic bakery right across from the entrance to the Roman Baths, they make the most amazing brownies!

The Pig & Fiddle is a great pub with yummy cider on tap and good food.

Have fun! :)

Thanks for all the input, everyone - keep it coming if anyone has anything to add!

I know we are going to do the baths for sure!  And we'll be walking around checking out the architecture, etc - as many of you know, hubby loves to take photographs...  I hope the weather is decent.

I'll be looking at all the links & info to make up our minds what all we're going to do, and I'll update after we've been! :)

If you want a great cafe, go to the Shoon shop and go upstairs. It's this wonderful light, airy place and they have the best cakes and gooey stuff there....

I highly recommend the chocolate/caramel slice that's about as big as your hand....cute staff too! Great atmosphere - very un-chain like  ;)

The bus tour around the city can be good, my first trip around we had a great enthusiastic guide who knew everything (well more than me for sure :P) about the city architecture. Second trip guide was good but not as, wouldn't have noticed it if the first guy hadn't been so keen. They go all around the inside of the city and then around the outer edge. It's a good thing to go on early in your trip as you may see some sights that you'd like to investigate later.

Also, if you walk along the canal there are boat trips super cheap. It's so beautiful down there.

There is also a good Spanish restaurant called La Flamenca in the vaults near the abbey. They have flamenca dancing some nights, definately worth calling ahead to see if it's on. Really nice food.

Thanks for everyone's helpful tips!  We got back home last night - although the rail journey there didn't seem so long (3 1/2 hours to Bristol, then a 10 minute train to Bath), the journey home seemed interminable - maybe that's always the way?  Plus it was late & we were all holiday'd out! :P

Surprisingly, I didn't find Bath nearly as crowded as I thought it would be - though it is most definitely full of American tourists!  Maybe it wasn't as crowded because I am used to the crowds in Leeds city centre?  And also the weather was a bit crap which may have stayed the hordes?  In any case, the crowds were tolerable!  Steve and I had a laugh about how most of the American tourists appear to stay down south, because it fulfills everyone's ideals of what 'jolly olde England' is supposed to be.  Not venturing up north, because 'thar be dragons!' - 'er no, that's Wales, isn't it?  Ha ha - oh well!

We stayed at a lovely B&B - The Henry, which was clean, well-located (near rail station & near city centre sights) - pretty much everything you want it to be!

Despite the on/off rains, we did lots of walking (just our own self-guided kind of rambling) around the city, admiring the beautiful buildings.  We went to the Roman Baths & that was really cool!  :)  (sorry neither of us are big Jane Austen fans, so we didn't go to her museum, nor did the costume museum hold any particular appeal for us)  We were going to go to the Holborne Museum and walked there in the rain on Saturday afternoon, only to find out it was closed!  :(

We did go on one of the free walking tours & that was really good too!  I think one of the highlights for us (which we had planned all along) was a trip to that Thermae Bath Spa, which was amazing!  We did the 3-hour twilight package, but we didn't eat there although the price includes a meal if you want it - we just stayed in the baths the entire time.  I wish we could go there all the time!  (although the steam rooms seemed to bring my occasional rosacea out, so had to calm that with some hydrocortisone cream afterwards)  It makes me want to go check out the Turkish Baths here in Harrogate as soon as we can!  I wasn't sure how I'd feel about the baths, because I do tend to feel quite self-conscious in a swimming suit being big like I am - but it wasn't any big deal.  There were people of all shapes, sizes, ages, etc there & everyone does their own thing, is in their own world...which only confirms that one should just relax and enjoy oneself because other people really don't care about you (how you look, etc) as much as you tend to think they might do.

Food - well Bath is certainly spoilt for choice!  The first night was a bit of a washout though (not only because of the rain - lol!) but we had set our hearts on going to that Yak Yeti Yak (Nepalese restaurant).  Steve was convinced we would not need a reservation...(you can see where this is going).  And of course, they couldn't take us, nor had we booked at any other popular restaurant in town. :(  Which ended up with me being one very unhappy camper - and we went for curry at that Eastern Eye place, which was like (IMO) eating in a gymnasium, versus the kind of intimate restaurant experience I had hoped for.  Plus I don't like menus with a thousand selections on them either - boo!

From thereon, it could only get better!  We had a lovely pub lunch on Sunday at The Raven - with yummy pies sourced from the Pieminister in Bristol, and there Steve had the best beer of the whole trip.  Plus the cider was nice too.  We also drank in the Salamander as well.  And Sunday evening, we went to Demuths! ;D  (who knew vegetarian food could taste so good?!!!)

On Monday, we went to Sally Lunn's for lunch, which was okay & I'm sure should be an essential part of a first trip to Bath - but I probably wouldn't eat there again.  I'm glad we did once though.  The cinnamon bun was delish!  (just wasn't crazy about the food otherwise, or the atmosphere--bit too twee, or the scatterbrained & grumpy waitress)  We got some provisions for our evening meal (which would be on the train) at the Guildhall market & some San Francisco Fudge Factory fudge to go!  Now that is what fudge should taste like (like what QG once sent me too!)...not the tough, chewy filling-pulling stuff that I've seen passed as fudge up here anyway.

All in all - a great weekend trip!  (just sad that we couldn't go to as many restaurants as we'd like to have done!)  And I'd say that 2 days (give or take) was about right to spend in Bath. :D
