The myth about fruit
« on: January 23, 2008, 11:17:01 AM »
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

People fail to realise that a lot of fruit/veg lose its nutrional value minutes after being cut open/processed/juiced/blended/etc.  The best way to eat something is in its natural form.  If you're going to blend a smoothie for yourself, drink it within 15 minutes before all the vitamins have a chance to disappear.

Addtionally, fruit IS sugar.  A lot of people fail to see this.  It's natural and contains benefits, but it WILL spike your blood sugar like a piece of white bread.  Vegetables don't do this as much, since they contain on the whole much more fibre & vitamins than most fruits.  Fruit is good as PART of your 5-a-day and part of a healthy eating plan, but it is not the end-all be-all solution to good nutrition.

That said, I always have an apple in my lunch! ;)

The whole idea of there being "superfoods" is silly.  Eating too much of any food, no matter how healthy it is in moderation, means you risk not eating enough of other foods and therefore not getting vital nutrients.

The best diet is a varied diet.
