1/2 and 1/2, Single Cream, etc

Appologies if this was done before, don't have time to search right now-
Is single cream equivalent of 1/2 and 1/2?  And if so, do they make reduced fat, fat-free single cream?

Single cream is about 18% fat which is higher than half and half and closer to US Light Cream.

You can buy reduced fat versions of cream, Elmlea is a common brand.

I'm looking for something to put in my coffee- I used to use Reduced Fat 1/2 and 1/2 in the US-
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

Tesco, Waitrose and Sainsburys all do a low fat pouring cream, which is fresh versus Elmlea which uses hydrogenate vegatable fat (yuck) as well as buttermilk fat.

US half and half is generally 12.5% fat whilst the low fat pouring cream here is only 9%.  I find it works a treat in coffee--use it all the time.

The mistake I made first time I went to the US, was I thought half and half was the same as semi-skimmed milk! That coffee tasted awful to me!

Isn't it funny what we all end up liking in coffee?  Since I was raised on 1/2 and 1/2, I'm having trouble getting used to coffee without it

Good to know!  I've passed up the low fat pouring cream because I saw the Elmlea was partially hydrogenated and, not being able to find ingredients on the pouring cream, I assumed it was too. 
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

One thing I will never get is people using skim milk in coffee--yuck!  Saving a few calories or fat grams that way is pointless to me.  Sort of like people using artificial sweeteners in their coffee or tea just to save a measley 16 calories--it's not going to make or break your diet, people!

I have semi-skimmed in coffee, because thats the only milk I buy at home so it's what I'm used to....so I then find anything else to be too rich in the coffee....it's not a deal breaker though, if I'm out and they just have full fat or cream then I'll have that.


And those 16 calories mount up....might as well not have them if you can easily substitute something else and not really give up on taste.

I use it because I like it, not for diet reasons! I find UK skimmed milk is lovely and much creamier than that awful 'blue' US skimmed stuff.

I don't put  milk in coffee because I want to save calories; I put milk in coffee because cream is heavy and yucky. It's coffee, not pudding.

I was about to post the same thing! Not everyone likes the taste and thickness of cream or even full fat milk in coffee. I personally don't like anything at all in my coffee but if I only have access to instant or if I'm having tea I prefer the taste of semi or skimmed milk.
