Making sour cream?
« on: January 24, 2008, 05:00:58 PM »
I can't find sour cream anywhere.  I was mentioning this the other day when talking to my SIL, and she suggested adding a bit of lemon juice to creme fraiche and that should give me more of a sour cream flavor.  Has anyone here done this?

Where are you looking?  I buy sour(ed) cream from Sainsbury's all the time.  I've also bought it at Co-op, Tesco, Asda and Waitrose.

No, I finally found sour cream. Tesco has it. I first found it at the large store on the M1, but now even my smaller one down the road has it. Have you tried them yet? Even if your Tesco doesn't have it seems they could special order it if the chain carries it.

I find that creme fraiche works fine as sour cream without adding anything.

Fromage Frais is a good substitute too.

I've never had a problem finding sour cream. Most grocery stores carry it. Though I have never tried to make it, I have always wondered about that as well as cottage cheese.  I remember my grandmother telling me all these steps from soured milk right on up on how to churn butter. Wish I had listened more!

You should be able to find sour(ed) cream, Tescos would be your best bet. Other grocery stores in Belfast had it too, I would imagine Derry would be similar in stock.

I use plain creme fraiche too.  The 'soured cream' I find a bit too liquid-y.

I've just gotten soured cream at Tesco, but chary's right, it is a bit liquidier than the US stuff.

Sainsbury's soured cream always seams a bit thicker than Tesco's.

I always mix the cream fraiche and soured cream together if I am making dips.

I've found the soured cream at Tesco, but it's really liquid-y. Unless there's a way to thicken it a bit? I've tried creme fraiche on it's own, but wasn't too keen on it (I'm really finicky unfortunately lol).  I just want to find something good to put on a baked potato.

Ubley brand by Yeo Valley is good.   Carried at most Somerfield stores.  Nice and thick and rich.

I'll have to look out for that! I really love Yeo Valley yoghurt!
