Who oversees TV Licensing?
« on: January 24, 2008, 06:16:12 PM »
Could anyone tell me what body regulates/oversees the TV Licensing folks? Such as an ombudsman or perhaps something called the "Licensing Authority"?

The BBC is responsible for them, so if you have a complaint that's who you would go to.

I always thought it would make far more sense if the cable companies (Sky, NTL etc) handled the license charge as part of their package.

when we got BIL one of those freeview boxes, they had us fill out a tv license form at the shop, even though we already had a license. not sure when they started  doing it.  Seems silly really, anyone can just put bogus information on the form.

But what about people who just use an aerial? The money goes to the BBC to supplement them since they don't sell advertising, so it wouldn't make sense to have a cable company collect it.

Same if you buy a TV etx.....always been the case as long as I remember that they do that.

And it wouldn't make sense for Sky/cable companies to collect as, in this case, people with Freeview or just analogue terrestrial.

Recently, my husband bought a new TV and filled out the standard form with his name and address. However, the TV license is in my name (I don't know if he remembered that), so we received a letter saying that there was no record of the person buying the TV having a license.  It was very easy to sort out - there is a phone number to call if the license on the premises is in someone else's name. They seem to be pretty well-organised.

It's in the licensing laws.  A retail store is required to record all sales of apparatus capable of receiving broadcast TV (which includes VCRs, DVD recorders, cable boxes, satellite receivers, computer TV cards etc.) and notify TVL of the names and addresses.   Even second-hand places such as Ca$h Converters do it.

No need to waste time and money sorting anything out in a situation like this.  If you already have a license for the address in question, you've satisfied all the legal requirements.  You are under no obligation to respond to the threatening letters.
