Did anyone else's pet have trouble adjusting?
« on: January 25, 2008, 02:15:51 PM »
Hello everyone,

I am having such major medical issues with my dog since we had him shipped over here.  I didn't have too many problems in the States an ear infection here and there and he has Schnauzer bumps which is a skin condition but once I learned how to care for those we haven't had a major flare up in months.  Now that he is over here, it is one problem after another, after another.  The big joke in our house is that he has a crush on the vet, he is a mini schnauzer and seems happy, he isn't moping about or anything.    I have probably taken him to the vet every month since we have lived here.  Do you think this is a string of bad luck or is it he really isn't adjusting well?

Maybe he is reacting to the dampness?

Maybe talk to the vet see if they can do any blood tests, do you have pet insurance Tescos does it on line.

It could be he is just out of sorts with the move and all.

Poor puppy  :(
I hope we get better weather with the new year I am getting rained out.

Good luck to everyone with respective visa applications.

I feel your pain.  Raisin has had numerous issues since the day I got her.

What kind of problems has he had since living here?  You've been here long enough, I would think if it was adjustment issues he would have gotten through them by now.

Raisin has the same problems here she had back home, but they have gotten worse.  One of the best things about living here is our vet, he is the best I have ever had.  We will miss him terribly when we move home in June.

You are right Dillinger has been here for a year, I have listed some of the problems below.

-We had to have a toe nail removed because it became infected
-We had to take him to the vet because when he walked across our walk he screamed, we found out that his feet weren't tough enough to stand the sharp concretey stuff so we had to do like 2 months of salt foot baths
-He has constant anal gland issues, the become impacted and we have tried every dog food and eating plan under the sun, and now we have made him intolerant to most foods except one
-He limps on different legs at different times
-He literally makes himself sick sometimes if we get the suitcases out.
-Almost constant ear infections.
-More vomiting than I have ever seen before in my life
-The best is that he has night terrors, about 3 times a month we get the shock of our lives because about 3am he leaves out a shriek that will leave you shaking it is the most God awful noise ever, and after you wake him up his eyes are so wide you can see the white of his eyes and he doesn't want to leave your side it is very scary.

In between all of these episodes he is a cheery happy little dog, I just feel like moving him here was a big mistake.  He is only 5 but he moves around like he is 20 and this has happened ever since we have shipped him over.

Have you tried Bach's Rescue Remedy? My aunt swears by it for anxious dogs.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I think you should go to a different vet, outline all the problems you have had and perhaps and ask about some other forms of treatment. With so many problems I find it bizarre that your current vet has not considered looking into other options. A fresh approach may be needed for your dog to improve...good luck.

My dog has to be the strangest around, yesterday he woke up raring to go, not an ache or a pain and then last night all he did was whimper and act as though he was in a great deal of pain.  He got up this moring raring to go again, excited for his walk, jumping up and down off the couch.  I don't get it.

We had a cat once that went completely bonkers after we moved her.  She was never the same.  The move traumatised her so badly that she would completely lose her bowels anytime there were loud noises.

How did he travel, was it by plane? I have had people tell me their dogs were never the same after they flew them. My dogs are both weird already, they were both abused and are very fragile so we are takiing them by the QM2 because i am afraid something like that would happen to them.

He flew by plane.  I don't really think it was the plane ride, I think it is the Enlgish weather, he isn't timid or shy or anxious, he has just had a string of medical problems, all are minor and treatable it is just weird that all seems to be happening in a string.

I looked for Rescue Remedy a few months back, the local shop didn't have it.  (Not sure if Bach's has changed the name or the shop was just out.)
I bought Five Flower Remedy instead.  It works too, the staff said it's the same stuff.
