Low protein dog food
« on: January 27, 2008, 07:15:42 PM »
My dog's trainer recommended we get a low protein dog food for Samson in hopes of calming him down a bit. Right now he's on 23% protein. She suggested around 18%. She recommended a brand 'Chappy' which I never heard of. Does anyone know of any low pro dog foods?

Your vet would be the best person to ask.   :)

Raisin is on a low-allergen, low-fat dry kibble we have to purchase from our vet.  Not sure about low protein.

Willie's on special vet-only catfood as well. His is Hill's Prescription which is very good. I don't know if they do a low-protein one, but I wouldn't be surprised. Ask your vet.

Edited: Just wanted to add that they do dogfood as well! Not just catfood!  :)

I just checked and her food is 17.5% protein.  It's Hills Ultra Low-Allergen.

I know we can get it from the vet but Samson is massive and it would either mean paying the mortgage or buying him vet bought pet food. We do have a Pets at Home here. I think I'll pop in tomorrow morning and speak to them. They seem to have a large variety.

Chappie is available at normal grocery stores I think.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

The trainer said she gets it at Tesco but ours doesn't have it. Maybe I'll check Tesco.com

Is that Hills ordinary or Prescription Plan?

I just looked up Hill Prescription Diet K/D for dogs and it's 12-13.4% protein.

Sorry for the hijack, but -

chary, is Willie on the Hill's for weight control?  Xan just hit 17lbs and I'm started to get a bit worried about keeping him healthy.

I'm surprised your trainer wants to lower the protein.  With Rufus, he is completely nuts if he is on a low protein  diet.  We feed him raw meat and kibbles.

We feed him Burns which is an organic dog food.  I noticed a big difference in everything when we switched to Burns.  It is low on the additives the big pet food brands have (Hills, purina, Bakers, Iams, Eukanuba etc..)  He just seemed healthier all the way around.

We also give him Prize choice frozen free flow meat (chicken beef or lamb) from Pets at Home.  He gets fed twice a day.

There are those who swear by the BARF diet that is essentially an all raw diet that is mostly bones.  The biggest selling point being a much calmer dog.

Rufus was fed on raw chicken carcusses at the shelter and did really well.  It takes a lot of organisation to get it going but for those who feed their dogs BARF, they swear by it.

She said because Sam isn't getting enough exercise I should give him less protein. I never heard of the BARF diet. I may check it out. I gave Samson some raw steak a few night ago and he loved it. I do worry about the expense though.  What sort of raw meat do you give Rufus?

Just as an aside, Hills is actually very low in additives! And, just as importantly, it's low in 'filler.' My vet advised against Eukanuba but said that Iams is the worst by far!

One thing hills is high in is salt.  The natural line isn't bad though.

Maybe you're talking about the Hills stuff that's sold in supermarkets? I'm not sure. But the Hill's Prescription stuff is different.
