Pancake Day/Shrove Tuesday 2008
« on: January 31, 2008, 01:04:49 AM »
DB's mum sent an e-mail to remind us about Pancake Day on the 5th! It's so much earlier this year!!!

I am thinking of trying to wake up early and making American pancakes for breakfast then making English pancakes at night...going with tradition for both!  ;D  ;)

I have never made English pancakes before, and DB is no cook. Does anyone have any tips for making traditional English pancakes? Is the recipe for an English pancake the same as a crepe recipe or is it different? I want to think ahead since I'm doing the food shopping on Friday or Saturday and I might want to practice the English pancakes ahead of time.  :-\\\\

What are your plans this year?

English pancakes are the same as crepes.  If you don't want to make them you can find them ready made at your local supermarket but they are so much better home made.  If you are short of time they can be made a day or so ahead of time and kept in the fridge.

I've got a really easy recipe for crepes, they are so yummy! I think the trick is to let the batter spread evenly, (tipping the pan around) and then not letting them overcook.

There are only ONE kind of pancakes for pancake day and that's American style (we have pancake day in Canada so there is precedent!)!

I always make buttermilk pancakes, sausages, fried potatoes and some kind of veg/fruit thingy.  Yum Yum!! and maple syrup - none of this sugar and lemon juice thing.

Yay Pancake Day!

French crepes = english pancakes.  They are dead easy to make, just flour, eggs, pinch of salt, milk.  The mix should be the consistency of single cream, and if you have any batter left over you can make Yorkshire Pudding.

Serve with Jam or granulated sugar with lemon juice.  And don't forgetting the tossing!  ;)

It's always a dilemma in our house which style pancake to do. I've had trouble getting my American ones as fluffy as I want, but I tried Meg's suggestion about increasing the flour (for cookies) and that did help with the pancakes as well. DH prefers crepes but will eat either.

Decisions, decisions!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

We are going to have american pancakes provided I feel up to eating them. And most likely we will eat them at night not morning. anyhow, just had to pass on a nice find in sainsburys. The golden syrup maple kind that is like £.99 is almost identical to american syrups. I was shocked! nice and thick, nice taste. mmmm.
Also aunt jemima pancake mix is avaliable in tesco! Mine are fluffy, and I finally sussed the trick to being low-medium heat or they turn out burnt to a crisp, but add a bit of butter or a smiiiidge of oil before. Oh and to wait for the bubbles. I hate waiting but then I end up with a huge mess. I was forever trying to hurry them up, and its just not pretty what I ended up with over and over. lol
which reminds me, i need more icing sugar! and milk, you cant eat pancakes and not drink milk.

Until I moved here I've never heard of eating pancakes with sugar and lemon juice. I always had them with sourcream before. But now lemon+splenda (can't have sugar. :( ) are my favorite ways to eat them.
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

Pancakes with lemon (or orange) and sugar are soooooo scrumptious!! Unfortunately, since I can't eat just one (or even just 10), I'm going to pass completely this year.  :(

Ha ha, sugar and lemon are okay on crepe like pancakes but definitely does not beat maple syrup on American style pancakes!

I brought some authentic Canadian Maple syrup back from my quickie trip to Vancouver over Christmas. It wasn't until I was on my way to the airport that I remembered I'd have to check my carryon.   :P

I was just going to say, FASNACHTS!!  I might do fasnachts in the morning, DH is doing English pancakes for dinner.

Can you post your recipe?  Thanks!

If I don't get fasnachts this year I will be a gretzy girl.
