I would recommend, from personal experience, against spending a night sleeping on the pavement outside Gare du Nord.  It's not fun.

 :(

If you want scenery, why not take the long route - train to Dover, ferry to Calais, train up to Paris?  Much nicer than a tunnel!

Don't worry, London is great.  Just be ready to plan trips to the coast, as you'll feel a bit landlocked at first!

Sure am glad I bought my plane tickets early. With the rising price of oil and all the Airline fiascos going on right now our tickets have went up $180!

I know what you mean - I waited a while to book my flights back home to the UK (I'm travelling around the same time as you - July/August) and ended up having to pay $1700 for my tickets (although it is a 5-leg, multi-city trip), whereas back in January, they would have been much cheaper!

Looks like we'll have to really get cracking on the place to stay now that it's May. Our plane leaves July 7th! It seems so close.... It's hard to believe, the excitement is unbearable.

This seems too good for the price, or am I wrong?

£205 Leman Street, Tower Hill, London, E1 8EY (Tower Hill, London e1 8EY)

Fully furnished double studio flat situated on the second floor of small conversion. Lovely and fully equipped kitchen with a fridge/freezer, cooker, hob, microwave and washing machine. Bathroom with a bath and power shower. Bright room with a sitting area and fitted wardrobe. Gas central heating. Double glazing. Carpeted. Located 5 mins walk from Tower Hill and Aldgate East tube stations and 15 mins from Liverpool Street.

I notice a lot of the ads trick you and are bedrooms part of houses with tons of other people in the house, or is this just common? Does flat generally just mean 'place to stay' or does it mean 'apartment' or either? For example, the bolded, italicized makes me think this is part of a house/condo. I'm asking in every inquiry if it's a share or single occupancy. Anyone know this area for this particular ad?

it sounds like it's a studio flat in a house which has been converted into flats, which is pretty common in London.  From the way the ad reads, it sounds self-contained and not just a room in a shared house- studio flat is the same thing as a studio apartment as far as I know.

$205 per week is pretty good for that area.  I used to live right around the corner.

Sounds like a studio flat in a converted house at a reasonable price for the area. Probably very small though.

£888.33 per calender month for a studio flat, albeit a large one in central London.  Hmmm....

I would ask for dimensions.  And I can't remember if you are travelling with a friend or partner but you should expect either a double bed or possibly a double sofa bed.  I'd also ask about bills and deposit on top of this.

But it has potential.  It's a great area for transport, for good pubs, for Brick Lane curries...
