Air France to US?
« on: February 06, 2008, 09:53:24 AM »
We are going to Los Angeles in early April to see my son. BA and Virgin prices have gone up. Air France has really reasonable prices right now £300 less than BA or Virgin. But last time we went we traveled with United and had a horrible experience. We are wondering if anyone has traveled to the US with Air France. What was the experience like? The food? Traveling with a toddler? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've never flown Air France but American Airlines is having a fare sale until 11 Feb. I checked random dates for early April from Heathrow to LAX (not sure your departure city) but they have a non stop flight for just £318 return. Worth checking out.  I just booked my tickets to Nashville for £333.

I flew back to Newark through Paris about five years ago now. I missed my connection and Air France put me up in a nice hotel, with dinner and breakfast thrown in. So, yeah, vive la Air France.    :)

We have both agreed never to fly any US carriers again after a couple of really bad experiences which is why I posed the question. DH only wants to fly BA or Virgin because of the quality of service. I was wondering if others such as Air France or KLM have similar high standards.

My sister lives in France and takes Air France to the US all the time with 2 little ones. She has never had a problem and speaks highly of them!

Well I can't argue with you but I'm an ex American Airlines employee who has encountered negative experiences with all sorts of airlines.
American Airlines are a member of the One World Alliance ..the same as British Airways. There standards are supposed to be the same.
I found KLM pretty good in a low budget airline type way. Nothing posh, just basic air transportation.
Good luck!

KLM is partners with NWA so if you are taking two flights you are likely to be on a no real frills NWA flight. That being said... I think BA and Virgin have also lowered their frills so these days it just feels like the accent is the main difference.  ;)

Have you checked Thomas Cook? Very reasonable fares.

I would NEVER fly Air France to the US again. They are HORRIBLE!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

What about BMI?

I honestly think its luck when it comes to airlines.  Sometimes I've had great treatment, sometimes not so great.  I go by price and luggage allowance when looking for flights.

I have to agree. I come from a family of airline pilots (Grandpa, Ozark, TWA, American) Dad(American Trans Air) and my fiance for BA.

They pretty much all have their good and bad points. I've had fantastic flights with Air New Zealand, and HORRID flight with them. Same goes for all the other airlines ive been on as well. Its really just the luck of the draw in terms of whos working that day both in the air and on the ground, weather, maintenance, other passangers..just many factors.

My policy when traveling is..buckle up and remember it'll be over at some point fairly soon :P And dont give attitude to airline employees either, because they will certainly make ever problem more of a problem if they sense attitude.

Sorry Rik  :-\\\\  but they aren't the same..we flew last year for my mom's funereal out with BA to Dallas and then on the return it was with AA from Tulsa to Chicago and onto Manchester and their staff are SO RUDE...BA was alot nicer..along with the food and the aircraft..

FYI..I had read something online about food..if you order a special meal sometimes the standard is ALOT better than the standard food they are supplying. I ordered the seafood meal on the flight with BA to Houston in Sept and the meal was superb...I have again ordered a seafood meal on our flight with CO..

I agree with this.  I always order a vegetarian or vegan meal and its usually quite nice.

It was the traveling with a child that made my experience with them so awful. I know I posted about it... will see if I can find the thread...

My future Inlaws both got sick on their return flight with BA from barbados! :(

Again I just think its the luck of the draw the majority of the time! :-\\\\
