For any Texans...some advice please!
« on: February 07, 2008, 11:30:00 PM »
I am new to Dallas, DH and I moved here Jan 1st of 2008 and now he is up for a better job within his company and the work would mean he would spend a majority of his time in Houston. He can live in Dallas and work there 3-4 days a week or we can move to Houston and he may still have to come to work in Dallas once in a while for a few days etc...

My question is - which is better for living in general? Houston or Dallas? I have not been here long enough to be attached to it here, what I can say is that I have found some good work connections and the Pilates industry is thriving here. That's not to say it isn't thriving in Houston though either. Any opinions or actual experiences would be really helpful, thanks!

I was born and raised quite close to Dallas! I've lived in both Dallas and Houston, so to answer your question, I'd say Dallas without a doubt. I'm not a big fan of either city, but I completely hated Houston. It may just be my large-city fears, but I found people in Houston to be a bit cold (apologies to any Houstonians reading, this definitely does not apply to everyone!), driving there was possibly the most terrifying experience of my life, and the summers are unbearable (for me, anyway). If it were me making the decision, I'd stay in Dallas *shrug*

And please, please don't be offended, Houston people. I may have just had a bad experience. I love you, really  :\\\'(
It was most definitely...a THING.

I was born and brought up in Houston, and I'd pick Houston over Dallas.

Dallas can get awful weather in winter, but is just as hot in summer.

I also find Houston more ethnically diverse.

I've got two first cousins in Dallas, but all my immediate family are still in Houston.

Pretty cheap housing.

Thanks for the input, it has helped.

More opinions/insight are still wanted! I know there are more Texans on here  :P
Or others that have been or know anything about either cities.

If we consider the move, I will definitely go and visit to see what it's all about. I have heard only negative things before this post, but I don't want to judge before I know more.

We live in Houston now but I'm not a "native"/have no family around.  I haven't lived in Dallas so I can't really compare.  But Houston is big.  Really big.  Traffic is awful.  It's not a pretty city.  It's a sprawling metropolitan area.

On the good side, it's got diversity (however, it also seems pretty segregated to me).  There are loads of restaurants.  It's close to the ocean.   I think the weather is better than Dallas~  it's more humid for sure, but the winter is milder.  Housing is inexpensive (although it's not terrible in Dallas either).  It's easy to travel from here (although nothing like traveling from London).   ::)

I don't LOVE Houston but I don't know that I'd LOVE Dallas either.  I'm not a Texan so I don't feel that connection that the born and bred Texans do.

I guess if your husband really wants the promotion, I'd rather be in the place that he's in more often and that would mean Houston.  And if he'd be traveling/driving to Dallas often, I'd be on the north side of town, which would also put you closer to IAH, and it's a pretty part of Houston too.

I grew up in Houston and I'm actually there right now visiting my family!  I've always liked the city- there's always lots going on and I think it's fairly diverse. Low cost of living overall, and housing is very cheap.

Traffic can be horrible during rush hour, no lie- but living somewhere that minimises your commute helps a lot (both of my parents work within 15-20 minutes of where they live when there's no traffic, which means that even when there is traffic it's not so bad.)  And the only major traffic is during the peak commuting times- during the middle of the day or later in the evening it's fine.

The weather is nice (very mild winters!) except for the summer , but you get used to those and most of your time is going to be spent where there's air conditioning anyway.

I haven't spent a lot of time in Dallas so I can't really make a fair comparison there, but I do like Houston and if I ever did move back to the States I wouldn't mind living there again.

I've traveled around Texas a number of times & been to both.  I'd pick Dallas over Houston (can't say I really like either tbh).  Whereas I loved living in Tampa, Florida because of the heat & humidity...Houston was quite possibly the most miserable climate I ever visited in the US (Biloxi is right up there too) for its heat & humidity - in that there doesn't seem to be any breeze.  (Tampa we had breezes off the Gulf.)  And I was there in mid- to late October (in Houston)!  Also, wasn't there some statistic about Houston having some of the worst air pollution in all of the US?  (Might be something to do with the lack of breeze again.)

I'm not crazy about Dallas, but in this particular instance, I'd sooner pick hot & drier to hot & absolutely stifling.  Sorry for the negative review - it's just MO, and others are free to disagree. :)

I've never lived in Houston, but traveled there many times for business. I lived in the DFW area off and on for about 8 years and I would definitely pick Dallas over Houston. It does get quite hot in Dallas, but I found Houston much more humid.

I lived in Houston for over a decade and visited Dallas a few times. I don't think there are necessarily huge differences. Perhaps from what you wrote Houston makes sense if he would have to be there for days at a time anyway in terms of the separations. I do know that Houston has several large gyms that you could consider working for...I used to work for 24 Hour as a personal trainer and they are fair to both customers and employees. They even offer reasonable health insurance to part-time employees. If you move to Houston consider the burbs such as Katy, the Woodlands or Clear Lake in terms of quality of life, but longer commutes into the city.

Or, San Antonio - I really liked San Antonio! :)

I love 'em both!

My folks are both San Antonio natives - their families are mostly still there, except we cousins sort of branched out and are all over now, including my first cuz headed to Italy next month (can't wait to see her!).

And I went to university in Austin.

But if I had to punt, I'd say Austin, too.

But then, it's been a looooonnggg loooonggg time since I've lived there.

You couldn't pay me to move back to Houston.

You couldn't pay me to move back to Houston.

Yes, but I apply that the entire state myself.  ;D

But if it's a choice between the lesser of two evils, and it's a game of Death Is Not An Option, then I'd have to go for Houston, where at least I'd have access to free babysitting from a variety of relatives. ;)
