Hi & welcome I'm in Sheffield as well!

I have a friend that's got similar credentials to you (long list really), but primarily bio-arch, forensic anth & 3-D forensic craniofacial reconstruction artist. Last I heard from her she was working for the Army Corps of Egnineers and helped to collect evidence to convict Saddam...

I know its cheesy, but have you thought about Time Team?   ;D  There's also Jorvik in York - its a living Arch project...

I am so jealous of your friend, I so wanted to go into the Mass Graves Unit for Iraq.
Yes, I have see a couple of episodes of Time Team.  Bradford Uni really looks down on it, it is pretty funny.  However, I think it is good to get people to look into archaeology.
I reject your reality and insert my own.

Just curious, why is it looked down on?  My hubby and I just discovered it.  I thought it was really cool.

I've always loved archaeology and even took a Master's level class in it after I got my degree in Painting just to see what it was all about besides the actual going out into the field and digging part.  I loved the class but realized me becoming an archaeologist was most likely not going to happen.

Hello Jessika,

Welcome to Bradford.  I live not too far away in a lovely suburb of Leeds, but I drive to Bradford most days to take my son to school.  As everyone has said, there is a lot of beautiful countryside for walking just outside of Bradford.  If you're stuck for transport, check out where you can get to on the trains.  I used to take the trains a lot until I finally buckled down and got my UK drivers license.

That's really odd that Bradford Uni looks down on it, as the majority of the Uni of Sheffield staff works with them (maybe Uni-rivalry?).   :-\\\\  Most artifacts end up being sent to Sheffield for further investigation.  Weird.  I know it can encourage people to disrupt or attempt to dig a site themselves, but it raises so much more awareness and educating the masses as well.   :P  Nearer to where I live there's Creswell Crags.  They've turned it into an "Museum and Archaeology Park".  You can access by rail if you're not able to drive, its quite interresting with a lot of Ice Age history.

Get the train to Keighley, then the bus up to Haworth - there are some lovely walks from there. Or the train to Skipton or Ilkley, both good places for starting a walk.

And you must go to Saltaire, which has a very interesting history: www.saltaire.yorks.com/ .Walk round the village and go into the mill to the Hockney Gallery (which is free). My husband works for Pace too, although we're both British.

I am sure that is part of it.  I think it is also the quick pace that they move at to open trenches and what not.  Honestly, I don't know and I have only seen a couple of episodes since I don't own a TV.

Hi bullajabbar,

I just came across this thread. I did my archaeology masters at Glasgow and am currently applying for phd programs in the UK. And I did my bachelors at Univ of Puget Sound in Tacoma! I used to go to Gig Harbor all the time! So beautiful there! I think parts of Scotland remind me of the mountains and the rain.

Have you found a job yet? My friend also does Forensic Arch and shes a Cambridge PhD grad and has trouble finding a job sometimes-right now shes on a 1 yr fellowship in the states. Its tough out there...which is why I waited 3 yrs to go back for a PhD, because I wanted to see if this was really what I wanted to do. Knowing all the obstacles ahead for archaeologists makes it difficult to pursue the career. But I think its worth it. :)

FWIW, oracleapollo, it doesn't appear that bullajabbar has visited this website in more than two years.
