Wish it wasn't so far, sounds like so much fun!  Tea and books - my two favorites!
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

Really?  A cream tea is the sum af all earthly pleasures!!

You must live a sheltered life. ;)

Well to be fair, the only thing I can think of to top it is a naked cream tea for two!

Afternoon tea hold no particular interest for me and I doubt it would for my hubby either.  I wouldn't be opposed to it with girlfriends though.

I'd say our ritual is having dinner together every night.  Our place is too small for a dining table so we sit on the sofa and eat off of trays.  Eating dinner together is very important to my husband and it is for me now, too.

Has anyone ever had a grand afternoon tea - somewhere like the Ritz?  My sister fancies doing it on her next visit over and willing to pay the grotesque London prices..

I have, a few times and it's fabulous!

It's about £35, which IMO is not that outrageous.  Especially because they refill everything as much as you want.  It's worth it as well for the gorgeous room you sit in.  I went with Maddierose last time and we had a great time!

You need to book far in advance and you can do that on-line at their site.

What's the dresscode like?
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

I would say business casual.  A few people had on some fancy frocks, but We just did nice trousers and shirt.  We didn't feel out of place at all.

Ahh thanks. I figured they didn't actually require gossamer and lace but you know how an image dies hard. :)

Not in the UK, but at the Empress in Victoria, BC on our honeymoon. Also grotesquely priced, but very lovely!

The Empress!!! We went there on holiday EVERY summer when I was a child! It was my home from home!

I'll add my recommendation for a fancy tea! It's lovely! And, for me anyway, it's nice to have an excuse to dress up a bit.  :)

Lucky girl! We spent 10 days on Vancouver Island, and I adored it. I could get used to that as a home from home! :)

Not in London, no.  But...My co-workers and I held a fancy pants-y tea for a soon-to-be married friend at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington DC.  Was quite nice.  Expensive, but a nice treat. http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/wassh-renaissance-mayflower-hotel/

Also, if you're in DC and want a nice tea experience, afternoon tea aside, Teaism has great atmos.  I love the Dupont location.  http://www.teaism.com/

Locally, and for a treat, the huz and I will go to Peacocks Tearoom in Ely.  http://www.peacockstearoom.co.uk/
It's not so expensive if you keep it to a pot of tea, but I like to go all out girly sometimes.  I have no problem dragging the huz in with me and ordering a "Peacock's New Pink Perfection!"  http://www.peacockstearoom.co.uk/menu/page3.asp   ;D

Psst, the huz gets paid in $'s, so Peacock's really is a splurge!   ;)
