Not sure if it's a regional thing or what.  I'm from Los Angeles and we always had chili with tomatoes in it.  I'm guessing it's personal preference?

Not sure!
Im from So Cal as well, and our chilli never had tomatoes in it!
It's definitely a personal preference for me, but a preference that was formed by many years of experience!

I've NEVER seen/had chilli that was NOT made with tomatoes!  :o

What would you use instead of tomatoes in the chilli? Would you be able to post your own chilli recipe Genau?

Me either! I was just going to ask the same thing! I have had white bean  chicken chili, but that's a whole different thing.

Stacey I usually defrost quorn mince in the microwave then cook the chili as you would using meat mince, although obviously it doesn't need browning.

When I make chili or Spag Bol with Quorn mince, I cook it long enough to heat it through and add beef Bovril to it.

I dont have a recipe to post... i just wing it.
But basically you make it the same as you normally do;  same spices, seasonings, etc, but just dont put tomatoes in!
You need tinned beans -- dont drain off the juice, pour the lot into the chilli.   And then add beef stock (not Oxo!!) to make it more beefy tasting.
If it's too liquidy, i thicken it with masa harina, which gives a nice undercurrent of flavour.

That's about it!

I have never seen chili of this description before.  Ever.  Have you had the tomato kind before, Genau?
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

You may not have *seen* it, but i can just about guarantee you've eaten it!   Lots of places make chili without tomatoes, and that's roughly how they make it.   :)

I mean, other than the "white" chili, every other chili I've eaten has been red, and had a tomato base, if not actual chunks of tomato.  Not sure it would be the same without... ???  But I'm willing to try it sometime.

I dont like red food!
Even my bolognese is brown... although it does have tomatoes in it.  It also has a lot of beef stock.  I feel it should taste beefy, not tomato-y!

Ha!!! Good memories of Bob's Big Boy.... I wonder if that's how Wendy's makes their chili. I love theirs!

No, Wendys has tomato in it... or it used to when i worked there in high school.

Just in case anyone is interested (i appreciate that you might not be!), here are some chilli recipes - some just historical references - and i dont think that any of them have tomatoes in... so im definitely not alone!  :)

That explains it.  I absolutely adore tomatoes and will eat them any way I can get them.  Yeah, Wendy's is tomato-based chili.
