Got a HUGE package of information and forms from the IRS yesterday.  Read them over and got a headache.  ::)

It was basically a huge booklet (like yellow pages size) with 1040 and other forms, plus instructions.

The other posts in this section should help you in determining what to file. I know I found them invaluable last year.

This is the second year I've got it.

I love it!

It has every form and instruction leaflet that you could possibly need, so you don't have to go searching around on the internet for everything then worry that you've forgotten something.

You can just go through the whole book, reading and filling out the stuff you need, and ignoring the stuff you don't.

It makes it much easier for me.

Chrissy, I suppose you could get a contact number from the IRS website and ask them to sendy you one.

Did u request this IRS package or was it just automatically sent to you? If you requested it ... where can I get one?

It was automatically sent to me. I guess because I had the forms mailed to me when I was in the US, so I'm still on their list. Did you give them your change of address when you moved to the UK?

I got mine automatically as well, I imagine because I filed from here last year.

I've just requested the 1040 tax package + the 2555-EZ form on the IRS website- probably not the same thing the Professor and SlicesMissus are getting, but it will be helpful to get everything in one package (yeah, I know I could download things piecemeal from the website but I'm more likely to sit down and read everything if it arrives at my doorstep!)

This is the first year ever that I'm filing taxes and I'm already confused- the only thing I know is that I have to file the 1040 and 2555.  The rest will come later :P :)

The package is specifically for taxpayers in foreign countries.

I'm glad I got on their mailing list then- hopefully I'll get one next year!

I got it, I dread to really look through it.  I filled everything out in Adobe last year, printed and sent 'em in.  It is nice that they send 'em all out though, so you know which forms to fill out...   :-\\\\  (Yes, it does have the TD F 90-22.1 - Report of Foreign Bank Accounts).   :P

I'm no financial Adviser Andrea, but they do have a form 8917 (Tuition & Fees Deduction).  Maybe you should look into it to see if you can claim some taxes back since you've been studying abroad?   :-\\\\  (Never know, may come in handy for your upcoming nuptials.   ;))

Thanks for pointing my attention to it!  It won't make any difference though since I didn't work in the US at all in 2007 so I haven't paid in any US taxes already to get back!  (At least, this is if I am understanding how taxes work correctly- which is a dubious claim, at best.)

True, would it just be lovely to get a tax rebate for having to fill out these stupid forms even though we're not living in the US anymore?   ;D

On another note, my Mom mentioned something to me about the US Gov't giving out $600 per person or something to try and boost the economy...   :-\\\\  It sounded a bit dubious to me, has anyhone else heard about this?

Yep, it's true! My mum emailed me the story:
http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/080213/economy_stimulus.html

I'm not sure how that works with the foreign-earned income exclusion, though.
