Steel Cut Oats
« on: February 19, 2008, 03:53:13 PM »
I'm at a loss on this one.

I love steel cut oats (Irish oats/porridge), but hate rolled oats (oatmeal/porridge). I cannot for the life of me find steel cut oats here.

I've looked in all the supermarkets, Julian Graves, Poundland, etc. No luck. (And growing frustration from Adam over what it is I'm looking for, and why I have to look so intently at every box in the aisle.)

Anyone know where they're available here? I did a search, but the threads that came up didn't really tell me where to get them.

Am I going to have to resort to either importing them from the US or filling a suitcase full of them when I go to Ireland in April??

Thanks.

I know Scott's do 'em - I used to buy 'em in the states at World Market.  You can usually find Scott's in every grocery store.  I know McCann's is another brand that does 'em as well.

Sorry to post again, but just had a quick look on Sainsbury's general website for ordering and they do their own brand of Scottish Porridge Oats (same as Irish Oats).  They're also known as coarse cut or pinhead oats.   ;)

I get them at the local health food shop. But I'm in Northern Ireland, so that might not help much... ;)

I eat them almost everyday, they are called pin head oats.  Tesco, Sainsbury and Waitrose all sell them.  If you want a big quantity online buy them here http://www.goodnessdirect.co.uk

I know this prolly doesn't help you but I saw them yesterday at Albertsons and I even asked my mom what they were because they were in the freezer department.

It looked like oatmeal  :-\\\\...what's the difference? Why is it frozen?  :-\\\\

I'd get McCann's in NYC, then I went to buying bulk in VT. The McCann's here is the quick cook kind, which are rolled.

That's what the stuff Criostin posted about is, I think. At least when I've looked at it in store, it's something like quick Scottish porridge, which ends up being rolled.

I'll check out Goodness Direct. It might be the best option for me.
