He's self-employed; she's FT employee. Can we file jointly?
« on: February 21, 2008, 04:35:01 PM »
Argh. Can somebody clarify what documents we need to file? Wife and I are both U.S. citizens, both UK residents.  Wife works full-time here for local council (teacher). I'm self-employed. can we file jointly, and if so, what documents do we need?  Neither of us made over the $85,700 threshold. If I'm reading this right, she is eligible for filing the 2555, but I am not because I have self-employed income, or is that just the 2555-EZ?  I hate tax season!

No you can file the 2555 if you qualify (eg you are registered here for paying tax etc).

You also need to file Schedulde B to disclose foreign bank accounts at the bottom of the page, Schedule C, Schedule SE, TDF 90-22.1, Form 1116 and of course include her employers pension contributions in taxable income on the return.

To clarify Guya's answer:

You file 2555, not 2555EZ.  You put the GROSS income on page 2 line 20(a) and make an adjustment for Sch C expenses on page 3 line 44.
