in need of shipping company please help
« on: February 21, 2008, 05:17:49 PM »
I have less than most want for the 100cubic feet but they are willing to charge $1500 anyhow for space I will not be using.

Altogether I have at most 35-45 cubic feet of items that I need shipped at most 65 if I include a wooden dresser, but I am only considering that to take up room.

I tried USPS UPS and DHL but they are REDICULOUSLY priced per item and would cost just as much if not more! Please help!!

So very appreciated,
-Steph

Perhaps you should reword the title of your post to say you are referring to a shipping company.

When I first read the title, I thought you were lonely.

Did you already try the UPAKWESHIP people??  They said something on their website about sharing a container.  Maybe they would just let you pay for the space you use?  I would also try to google search for international moving companies or just try your local phone book.  You can just call and ask if they do international, if so, can you get a free quote?  Most of them will do so, I would have to say this is the most stressful part of my move as well.  We are taking a lot because we have been living here in our house for 5 years and have too much that we can't just get rid of.  Furniture wise, we don't have a lot, but we do have lots of other stuff.  Some people had some posts in one section about shipping companies and how you could see if they had good reviews or not.

UPakWeShip charges you by the cubic feet.  I used them to move over here in 2006 and will be using them to ship my stuff home this summer.

They were great and everything arrived on time and only one thing broke, but thats because I didn't pack it so well!  :P

UPS and FedEx will not charge you by the item, but by the total weight of your entire shipment. This is a good thing, because the price per pound goes down (a lot!) as the weight goes up.

I second UPAKWESHIP!  I used them as well and it was fairly inexpensive.  I had 45 cubic feet, took it to the port in Boston, shipped to Liverpool, and it cost me all of $350.  Of course, price depends on where you live.  But, still, great price, great service, and only one thing broke.  But, like Jenn, I don't think it was packed too well (which was my fault).

I work for a freight forwarding companny called DSV Air & Sea with offices all over the UK going into all ports of call...

You could use our service called personal effects shipments which is basically what you stated about shipping you personal stuff over.  It would be put into a container as an LCL shipment which means that it will share with other shipments coming into the UK.  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE dont use a professional moving company as they will charge upwards of 10,000 USD.

If you need any further informaiton let me know.

I am thinking of shipping only my bedroom set to the UK. I have no idea of the weight or size of space required, along with some power tools (cordless), decor, clothing and a few other smaller items...how on earth do you find out what you need for shipping? Will VAT be applied to the items that come in? Do you have to have receipts for everything, as I've had my bedroom set for 4 years and don't have the receipts for it. I was planning on taking nothing, but after a recent visit in which we looked at replacing some items, I decided I better take a look into keeping what I have.

I've read many threads but don't really see the answers that I'm looking for...forgive me if I'm doing a repeat. Is there a particular type of shipping company that you need for shipping large items such as this?

Thanks for the help...

I would call around for a free quote.  That way they can assess what you've got and make an estimate for you on what exactly they are offering and how much space they think and the cost.

Michigal,
Check out this website:   http://www.movingscam.com/news/internationalMove.shtml
It has answered a lot of questions for me, as I am in the process of finding a shipping company also.
Along with k27davis' suggestion, having someone come out and assess what you plan to ship is a good idea.

Hope this helps some.

www.movingscam.com is a great site for lots of good answers from those who have already done a move such as this.  They can also steer you away from shippers that have caused problems in the past or give you an idea of good shippers - good luck.

We've used UPAKWESHIP twice both to the UK and back again.  Both times they have been reasonable, helpful and I can't recommend them enough.  The first time we didn't have one thing broke and this time I am still waiting to see.
