I'm being overtaxed!
« on: February 26, 2008, 10:05:14 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I've been at my company for 7 months and I'm still on the Basic Rate - I've filled out a P46 in Oct - Nov and have still heard nothing back and I'm being over-taxed by roughly £118/per month. That's adding up quick.

What should I do?

Thanks

I would get the number of the local tax office and talk to them.  It seems that perhaps your payroll group hasn't submitted your P46.  After I filled out my P46, I got a massive rebate the next paycheck.  Speak to your payroll department and call the tax office.

Thank you! You're brilliant! I called the tax office and they said a rebate should be on it's way soon. They even switched my tax bracket for me. I left it up to my payroll office for the past few months and absolutely nothing was done. In fact, my payroll office told me I should "just let fate work itself out" when I asked if I should call someone.

Thanks for the advice Dar. It's really going to pay off.

sorry, i probably should just call the tax office, but as I'm at work, it's easier to ask you guys. x

I think you have to submit the forms in april, so you won't get it right away.  At least that's what I was told.  I find that the UK govt always takes their time.  It's been over a month and we haven't gotten our child tax credits yet.

That happened to me when I was in my very first job here. I didn't submit any forms because I actually didn't realise I was being overtaxed. I just automatically got a cheque in the post shortly after the start of a new financial year....

Unusual.  Everywhere I've worked the change in Tax Code would automatically generate any rebate due through the payroll section, so it would be included in the next appropriate salary payment?

Have you checked that your payslip has the correct Tax Code on it?

i haven't gotten it yet, but i know it has the correct one and I will not be overtaxed this month, but they are waiting until april to do the rebate so that it's out of thier hands. I think they would just rather not do any more work than they have to.  :(

Last time I was due a rebate, it came with my first pay of the new financial year.  I don't think it is something that the employer deals with, but you can always call HMRC and see what is happening.

When I first started working, I started the job in October and received my "overtax" rebate before Christmas, through my employer.

Sorry if I'm being dumb here, but how can you tell if you are being taxed at the correct tax code?

if you do not have a national insurance number, or if you just got it you're probably being taxed at the emergency rate. before your tax number on your payslip you'll see BR (meaning basic rate) ask your accounts department if you are being taxed at basic rate (sometimes called emergency rate)
