found...Eggnog at Tesco and buffalo-like wings at Iceland!
« on: February 27, 2008, 02:03:23 AM »
OK I know its past the holiday season, but I was an my Tesco Extra (huuuge store!) and in the ethnic food aisle in the Jamaican section I found cartons of Eggnog! Apparently, it's a popular drink year-round in Jamaica and for 48p a carton, I thought it was good value and once chilled, tastes really good! I know its not everyone's cup of tea, but have a look next time ur at the big Tesco and see if they have it. You may also want to try 'Ting', its a Jamaican fizzy drink that is grapefruit flavoured...reminds me of my trip there years ago :).

Anyways I was excited and had to share the news. It was much better tasting than the tinned Borden eggnog I brought back from the USA years ago. The kind I bought at Tesco is still not perfect (not as thick as it should be) but good enough for me!

ALSO on another note, Iceland's buffalo wings are pretty good too. They have the breaded hot-and-spicy ones which are so-so, but the buffalo ones are great although they aren't 'buffalo' flavoured at all, just in a spicy BBQ-like sauce...but for £1.50 for a largish bag, I couldn't resist...now I need to find some more bleu cheese dip somewhere...

Tesco has Chicagao Town buffalo wings too - they're near the pizzas in the freezer section. I bought some for my husband to try out ages ago but they're still sitting in our icebox so I can't tell you if they are any good or not!

"Chicago Town" always makes me laugh - particularly the pizzas!

lol the buffalo flavoured made me chuckle as well. the chicago town ones aren't as nice as iceland's in my opinion, though neither are really 'buffalo' wings as the sauce is totally different (no hot sauce :( ) lol. no idea why they have a big jamaican section in glasgow, it was totally surprising. too bad they dont have an American section...though I enjoy Tesco's cream soda...so good!

It's a store - specialise in frozen foods (and generally in my experience their own brand stuff isn't that good)

Sorry, I should have gathered it was a store from the thread title!
Do they have locations in London, anyone know?  DH loves wings.  :)

Real Buffalo wings most definitely have hot sauce.  Well, I should say real wings have hot sauce.  What people call Buffalo wings outside Buffalo may vary.

Clean your wings and cut them in half.  Deep fry them until brown.  Toss with butter and hot sauce (most use Frank's Red Hot).  Serve with blue cheese (not ranch), celery and carrots.  Of course, this isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it's what you will get if you order wings in Buffalo.

No bread.  No BBQ sauce.  It becomes something different when you add those things.  Most places in Buffalo who do variations on wings will even put it in a separate menu section and call them something else.  ;D

ETA:  You can make your own sauce, but I've never done it.  Most people use pretty basic ingredients (Tabasco, vinegar, salt, pepper, ect).

I used to live near the place that claimed to invent them.  There are a few places in Buffalo that claim to have invented them, but most people accept the Anchor Bar on Main Street's claim.  If you ever make it to Buffalo, the Anchor Bar's wings are fair, but definitely not the best.  Their beef on weck is pretty good though.  Probably the best I had in Buffalo.

The lore is as follows: The owners of the Anchor bar had a son in college in the late 1960s.  He was coming home with some friends for a break.  He didn't bother calling his mom until late, so she didn't have time to go to the store.  All she had was some chicken wings and some condiments.  She came up with the method, and the Buffalo wing was born.

The food in Western New York is fabulous.  It's not the type of thing that gets much recognition outside the region (other than the wings) and not high cuisine, but very good stuff.  Wings are just one thing that I would suggest to a visitor in the area.

Iceland also does spicy chicken strips which are pretty tasty.

They have stores all over the place.....there's a store finder on the website
http://www.iceland.co.uk/

They used to do a really tasty spicy bean burger.....then I couldn't find them, asked to be told they stopped making them as they didn't sell. It was by far the best of their own brand products I'd had (most of the stuff seems cheap and nasty).
Then again - I often find things I particularly like get discontinued as they don't sell well, so that probably says more about me!
Teso's "Healthy choice" low fat blue cheese dressing seems to be another! Not seen it for months and not on the online shopping site either.
