The more expensive the laptop, the more price differential. I've been researching to buy since last May (I have problems making decisions. 
) and if you stick to basic Vostros and Inspirons, the price differential is at most 20%, and that's worth it to save yourself warranty hassle.
It's once you start getting into XPS models, that the price can (and often does) almost double.

Yep, this is basically how it is at the moment with market forces etc. It 'used' to be a good 30-50% difference especially if you went to the electronic discounters in places like Canal Street in NYC.
I bought a massively high spec XPS M1710 about 2 months before the current M1730 came out, on the Dell UK website speccing it up came to around £2500 - and I got it for £1525 from a discounter! that's a £900 saving! - on the USA Dell website it came to around $4400ish so around £2275 ish at the approximate at the time £1-$1.95 ish - the cheapest I could find a US discounter of the 'exact' same spec laptop was $3600 USD - so in this instance it suited me better to buy from here.
It's when you start looking at electronics released 'only' in the US market and not here that you can get some good bargains and/or not available in the UK items. That also transfers to many other products and markets - clothes and various household goods for instance.
So, if you can find a good discounter here in the UK, it can be more worthwhile to purchase here. The old days of not having to research so much for the best deal in the USA to knock spots of UK pricing is over!
