« on: April 19, 2004, 11:46:37 AM »
something my partner and myself were thinking about last night, as we were recently married and i will be applying for my settlement visa on april 30th -

once i have obtained my visa to settle in the UK, what is the procedure for getting my NIN?
(need i apply in person, will i be interviewed, where does the interview take place, how long approx. until i have a response
about my number?)

just curious for now. thanks in advance for any replies:)

NIN is the UK equivalent of the US SSN...just call a local job center and make an appointment.  Some will say you have to be actively looking for work in order to be granted the interview.  Haven't been through it myself yet, but I can' t imagine it'd take too long.

Your NHS number (medical) is obtained when you register w/ a local surgery.  I had my NHS card about 2 weeks after registering.  Not a big deal...just a regular physical w/ the nurse and a couple of questions about your medical history.
