The difference seems to be that 'mums who go to Iceland' open a packet and a tin and put it on a plate next to each other and Delia builds it up in a piedish or something.

Theres no way you can control the salt content, the additive count would skyrocket, and the spice blend would be all over the place from the different products.

I'm doing two of her recipes this week so it'll be interesting to see how they turn out. One calls for Heinz Tomato Frito - which i've never heard of..

I draw the line at her chocolate cake with frozen mash instead of butter. WTF is that about????????  Who cant stick a block of butter out to soften to room temp?

Edited to note that three ingredients needed for Delia's recipes are nowhere to be found in Sainsburys... so the Heinz Tomato Frito remains a mystery :-X

Some recipes I make call for mashed potato.  The doughnuts I make have them, so perhaps it isn't a replacement for butter?

Or maybe it is, as I am sure frozen mash already has butter in it.

Late for work one morning last week I found myself watching Lorraine Kelly (don't laugh...)

They had a nutritionist on it who made two pies - one Delia, one 'real'.  Although the Delia one took less time to prepare, it was only about 7 minutes less, and it took her an hour to go to all the different shops to get Delia's recommended products, whereas shopping for the real pie too about 10 minutes.

And the final result - Lorraine said the one with the tinned mince tasted like school dinners.

I have gone right off this woman.  She isn't teaching people to cook, she is teaching people how to reheat, which is all well and good but why pretend that it is anythign else?  She is also helping big supermarkets increase their profits.  I think I'll stick to Nigella, Hugh, Jamie and Gordon.

NB. Nigella puts potato in some of her bread - I think the starch helps it to rise.

Jews use potato starch in bread during passover when they can't use wheat. I also really like potato bread rolls they used to sell in a supermarket by my house in the U.S.
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

Almost all the ingredients she uses are M&S.  I heard on Radio 4 that they're coming out with a line of Delia foods.  I watched it for the first time today and HATED it.  I'll be damned if I'm going to use tinned meat in my spaghetti when it takes me almost no time at all to brown mince and I don't have to worry about preservatives.  I was offended by the condescending tone of the program and think she's completely lost the plot.

I watched it tonight as well and really thought it was a bad show. I'm not sure the recipes were as bad this week as last, but I did find her tone and approach off-putting.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Those tins of meat just look vile.

The one tonight looked like the wet food we give the cat as a treat.

I wouldnt use tinned meat in spaghetti - ew, ew, ew. (Plus the ASDA one comes in a gravy anyway that wouldn't go with spaghetti).

However, I must say, I once swore I would never eat hot dog in a can, either, and TBH the HDiC here is much tastier than any hot dogs or similar items in a can I had ever had in the states.

But tinned meat in spaghetti just sounds so wrong...

Yeah, but see, that's what being an expat of many years does to you:  it alters your taste buds so that you come to think all this stuff tasted better than any you had in the States.

See, I know deep down that Herta franks aren't as good as the ones I had out of Wild Oats Cherry Creek, but I can't let that get me down, cuz Herta's all I got.  :( ;)

I promise you that i honestly and truly think that Herta taste exactly the same as Californian hot dogs. Ikea, not so much, but i still like them!

Oh, no, the little wieners in a can that you used to get in the states when you were a kid were vile. Trust me on that. They had a funky taste. These over here are much, much better (and actually hot-dog tasting, go figure).

Funny enough though on the taste buds, and god forgive me for saying it, but I ....[tiny voice]prefer the pizza here now[/tiny voice].....whew!
