Favourite foreign films?
« on: March 16, 2008, 07:27:36 PM »
DH and I love watching foreign language films (our fav is Hidden) and would love to get recommendations for films to watch.  We watch a movie or two a week, so we're always thinking of new films to rent.

So..what's your favourite foreign film?

It's not foreign to me... but some great Hindi (Bollywood films) are 1947: Earth, Water and Lagaan - all historical, period films. The first two are about Partition, the latter is about the British Raj period (and cricket! it's superb). Great songs in Lagaan too.

If you're more into the super Bollywood song and dance ones, which are a lot of fun, but kind of long.. Om Shanti Om, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. A cute romantic one is Saathiya, and it has great songs.

One of the best ones to come out in the past ten years that is more youth-orientated and about what to do with life is Dil Chahta Hai. Amazing songs, and a fantastic story.

A super-cute Hong Kong romantic comedy is Love on a Diet - but be warned, if you watch it get take-away (lots of chow mein and savouries..)!

I'm quite partial to Au Revoir Les Enfants and Cyrano de Bergerac.  Also, as a more popular one, La Vita e Bella
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

Have you seen Amelie? That is a sweet French film.  Another French one I enjoyed is Max, Mon Amour, very funny.  Also, some good Iranian films - Bashu, Little Stranger; Gabbeh; Taste of Cherry; The Apple

I love Amelie!!

You've probably seen it as it's fairly recent, but Pan's Labyrinth is wonderful!

My husband and I both really enjoyed Pan's Labyrinth. We came really close to buying the boxed set of the director's movies but now I've gone blank on his name.

I also like 'My Life as a Dog' from years ago. And a French movie 'Tanguy' about some parents trying to force their grown up son to move out of their house - was quite funny.

I think his name is Guillermo del Toro?  The Devil's Backbone is also very good.  I loooved Pan's Labyrinth.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

This is my all-time favourite film. As soon as I saw the header for this thread, I was going to recommend it.

Many of my favorites are a few years (or decades!) old:

Tous les matins du monde
Farinelli
Wings of Desire
Jean de Florette and Manon de sources
Jules et Jim
The 400 Blows
La belle et la Bete
Raise the Red Lantern
Red Sorghum
Ran
Kontrol (I'm a bit biased on this one. The director grew up two houses down from me. ;) )

I watch a lot of German and Russian films, but they really aren't everyone's cup of tea.

Umbrellas of Churbourg and And Your Mother Too.

And another vote for both Cinema Paradiso and Like Water for Chocolate.
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"
