I second the vote for Ran. I've only seen it on a TV but wish I'd seen it in the cinema, the cinematography is breaktaking.

Cinematography is also amazing in House of Flying Daggers which is sort of a martial arts chick flick, but I love it.

I agree - beautiful film!  Ooo... we've forgotten Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.  So gorgeous and so sad.

My favorites are Diva and Tampopo.  Oh, I love Ran, too.. especially the actor who plays the fool.

oh yeah... Das Experiment

It's based on the Stanford Prison Experiment and harder to watch than American History X.

Another recommendation for films already mentioned:

Life is Beautiful
Amelie
Farinelli
He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
House of Flying Daggers
Run Lola Run
Pan's Labrynith

Others not mentioned that I liked:
Raise High the Red Lantern (Chinese)
Kikujiro (Japanese)
Wings of Desire (German)

There are several others that I really liked and now, I can't remember the names!

Most of my favorites that I can think of right now have already been mentioned.

I will add Trois hommes et un couffin (Three Men and a Cradle) which is the original French film.  A couple years later I saw the American remake and didn't like it.  I think the French version has a certain sweetness to it, without being sappy like the other one.

Raise High the Red Lantern (Chinese)

What a great movie! I completely forgot about it too. It's more commonly known as Raise the Red Lantern.

I must be the only person here to really didn't like Life is Beautiful.

And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

Meh, I don't really like Benigni in general.  That film was ok, I didn't think it was Oscar worthy.

Nope, I didnt either. It made me uncomfortable with the mix of humour in concentration camps (i.e. telling the little boy to run off to the showers with the other kids.)

It's not exactly an all-time classic, but I enjoyed watching "My Best Friend" ("Mon Meilleur Ami") recently...it was sweet and funny.

Whoops!  Sorry!

I remembered another film I loved (but, I am a costume drama history freak--still good, though!):

Queen Margot (French film based on the Dumas novel of the same name)

Also, I liked Eat, Drink, Man, Woman, which is a Chinese film.

Another that may not fully count as 'foreign' only because it's not all in a foreign language, but I think it's Canadian and has different languages used in it, is The Red Violin.

I loved, loved, loved this film - had no idea what to expect when I saw it.

Hollywood, CA -> London, UK 2004
London, UK -> Long Beach, CA 2007

Best 3 1/2 years of my life!

Yes!  In fact, I may have to find it at the library and watch it again.  Beautiful film.
