Texting and emailing would be EXCELLENT though.

I agree - especially if they enforced silent mode, so that you didn't hear a snippet of some pop song every time a text was received - or, even worse, the sound of a hundred people all of whom have the keyboard sounds turned on!  Ping ping ping ping ping etc....

I agree with everyone! When I travel by train, I always book a seat in the Quiet Carriage so I don't have to listen to people's phone conversations/ringtones. I still spend a lot of time texting friends, but it's nice and silent. I don't think I could take a long flight with everyone around me having phone conversations. I'm with Meg. If that happens, it'll be time to start swimming.

What kind of emergency is going to arise whilst flying at 30,000 feet that a mobile phone call is going to sort out?   ???

So I can imagine here's my boiling point-
I have just gotten off a horrible 12 hour flight from San Francisco- say United Airlines- into Heathrow- which, oh by the way was delayed 5 hours due to an issue with the plane- painful, painful, I was squished into the middle seat of the middle alise because this was a last minute flight back and that's the only seat I could get... there are only large movie screens, but its fine, I can't see it and my headphones only hum...the food they served was lukewarm and they ran out of the vegetarian option...  Everyone on all sides of me found it was important to blab back and forth about their kids, their holiday, their bunions, etc- Some business guys and gals are yelling into their phones about doing this and that and "oh there are all these inexperienced fliers around me who held up security for 35 minutes because they had 12 bottles of 12 oz of liquid in their carry on bags, their shoes had metal in them and they refused to take them off, and they left their laptops in their bags and of course forgot to put their phones through because they were still talking on them... Yeah, I was in that line too, but don't tell everyone I know that...During the flight I had 14 urgent calls to take care of and I had to log into my email 10 times to make sure that I sent the correct documents to work... Finally land, get off the plane... everyone on their phones still...
Finally get through cutoms, IO officer questions me 500 times that I still have the legal right to work in the UK and oh, can I see some proof... Finally get my bag, after waiting 20 minutes at the baggage claim...all around me everyone is still on those bloody phones... Make my way to central bus terminal...stand in a huge queue to purchase my national express tickets because the automated ticket machines have stopped working...
Finally get on my 1 hour coach ride to Gatwick- everyone is on their phones    during the whole damn trip!!  Make my way into the Gatwick north terminal where I know have to negotiate my way onto my Ryan Air flight because I was so late coming in from San Francisco... I finally get on the last flight of the day...  Go through the same security hell... Then I'm stuck in that horrible people land known as Gatwick's North terminal- and things have started to shut down...I'm starving...  its late, I'm 8 hours behind on California time, but I just want to curl into a ball and cry...  They finally post my gate on the tvs... I walk through the falling down corriders of gatwick, listening to everyone on their mobiles, blabbing away, even though its 10 pm- who is awake?  Since I was the last one to get onto my plane again, I'm stuck in a middle seat on the Ryan air flight... and everyone is on their phones again!!!  Oh but then we're delayed, we can't push back, the rain has come in and the wind, and we're not sure we're going to be able to get off the runway in time...so we sit...everyone calls again and again, "We're late, we're late" Flight attendants don't care, especially since its Ryan Air...  GAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Really brings new meaning to the "phone a friend" lifeline.  ;D

You forgot to mention that the guy sitting on your right hasn't showered on about two weeks, and the lady on your left has halitosis so bad, her breath melts steel. And she's a close talker who loves to chat! ;D

I have yet to meet one person who thinks this is a good idea. I just don't get it.

i flew on SAS 2 or so years ago- they had internet for something like $20 for the entire flight (9 hour flight to Tokyo made it somewhat worth it).  I didn't use it.  I didn't tell anyone at work they had it.  But I do see the appeal of SILENT communication.

Oh, absolutely.  Sometimes even for passengers on the same flight - I can think of a few folks whom I'd like to have been able to restrict to silent mode, text-only conversations in lieu of talking!!  ;D
