Hot Dogs revisited
« on: March 17, 2008, 07:09:52 PM »
I've read the Hot Dog thread and it's been awhile since anything has been posted there. I was wondering if there are any new developments on the Hot Dog front? Are the Hertas and  IKEA Hot Dogs still the best options around. Looking to have a little bon fire soon and want to cook hot dogs on sticks.

I allready have my fiancee buying American style yellow mustard!!

I know I said this before, but Costco do amazing dogs. Very close to American style ones, and they cost £2.89 for 5 HUGE GIANT hot dogs (they must be almost 6 inches long) If you can get to a Costco, thats your best bet.

As i've not tried the Costco ones, i stick with my opinion that Herta Jumbo are the best!  They're easily 6 inches long (but i dont consider that to be 'huge' or 'giant'... the non-jumbo ones are the same length, but just not as fat), and taste just like American, to me.

I second the "jumbo" Herta.  And don't buy the "hot dog rolls" they sell in the bread section - use the soft sub rolls that come 2 in a pack (usually) for the jumbo ones, and finger rolls for the regular ones.  MUCH better!

Agree on both the Hertas and the rolls. When I want to recreate the NY hot dog experience, I get the regular-sized franks and the finger rolls since their hot dog buns just taste off to me.

Still, I eagerly await the day Hebrew Nationals or Nathans make their way over. ;)

Has anyone managed to find all-beef hot dogs?  I miss my ballpark franks!

I recently bought the Costco hot dogs Racheeeeeeeeee mentioned. Very nice.
Tesco has French's yellow mustard by the way.

Try looking for Empire National frankfurters. They are kosher and while I can't guarantee all beef, they certainly won't have pork additives.

Edit: Not cheap, but....http://www.justkosher.co.uk/Category/Sausages_Viennas/

Lucky!  For some reason our Costco doesn't sell 'em.  They have 'em in their "cafe", but not to buy normal.   :\\\'(

They've started selling bloom's kosher hotdogs at sainsburys, we had some today and they were absolutely great, really reminded me of the ones I've had in NYC and my boy really liked them.
Seem much more American than the Herta ones, they're £3.49 a pack, you get five and they're about a foot long.

Have a picture :)
