Why?

In the 'Favourite Brit Speak' thread it seems that some of your compatriots find it rather endearing.

And why shouldn't men say it as well?

I like those sayings - bless him, you're a star...and when people call you luv.  I think it's cute.  And I really like it that UK men are more comfortable in their sexuality, don't have to be macho all the time, and can use words and phrases that in the US would be considered feminine, like "lovely".

How about.. playing/talking on their "mobiles"  Especially younger people, but I've seen many many people of every age group do it.   It's like they've been surgically attached and can't go 10 seconds without fiddling with their phones.

Then (on the trains and buses), they'll call their mates to tell them they're 5 minutes away.  ... then 4 minutes.. then 3 minutes.. then 2 minutes.. then at the stop.. Like.. LET IT GO!!  Stop arsing about playing on the phone for TWO SECONDS.

It's a national addiction!!

Aww, I like "You're a Star" or "Bless Him/Her." I think its sweet.

I also like when my boyfriend says, "Oh dear" (like how we would say "Uh oh.") So damn cute.  :-*

Ah, but the cell phone thing. I never seen worse addiction... Especially with text messages. I (and most of my NY friends/family) do NOT have the patience to sit there and type letters and all that when you can simply call once, get to the point and hang up. Oh well, different strokes for different folks!

OMG...  i am sooooooo anti-cellphone now, since moving here.  >:(   not so much having one and making calls, but the TEXTS!!   it is so ridiculous to me how many texts ppl in the UK send.  it is so impersonal.   the day after my birthday, about 5 ppl sent TEXTS to my HUSBAND'S phone that were meant for ME to say sorry they didn't make it the nite before, and happy birthday blah blah blah.  (i had like 8 no-shows at my "party", and only 4 others showed up... very hurt feelings on my part... sheesh... where were those texts when they would have been appropriate? :-\\\\)  i was even more pissed that they couldn't have taken the 5 min that it took to type out the message (to someone else's phone) and just CALL ME and say "hello/happy bday" in person.   how rude!  :\\\'(

also, i went to see the Basement Jaxx/Audio Bullies concert in Notts a few weeks back.   the place was WAAAAY oversold, and packed with too many ppl... i could hardly see the stage for the first 1/2 of the show.  i looked up on the stairwells, and in the balcony, and watched these few ppl (who had a great view) sit there with mobile phone in hand, sending and recieving TEXTS for the ENTIRE SHOW!!!  i couldn't believe it.  ???

i can understand the quick "see u in a few min." or "running late, be there soon" texts or whatever, but i find it extremely rude when ppl sit across from you in a pub, or wherever and spend 90% of their time typing in texts thru their phone.  i'd prefer they make the 5 min call and get it over with...  but, hey, that's just me.  ::)

oh, and another thing!  *lol*  the commercials and television shows ABOUT TEXTS...  (i.e. "When Texts Go Wrong" and that girl that slept with David Beckham, etc...)  or shows that have the TEXT STREAM running along the bottom of the screen...   :o  where does it end???

ok gotta go... i need to text myself a frickin LOVE POEM with my name in it...   ::)

AAAACCCCKKKKKK!  I can't stand it when people whip out their mobiles to text...endlessly...on the bus....in restaurants....in the cinema.  Seriously, texting "hey, wanna go to lunch tomorrow?" is fine, but people (especially teens) seem to text for hours on end.  They have ENTIRE conversations via text!  Why?????

Also, maybe this is just the teacher in me, but is anyone else worried that an entire generation isn't going to be able to spell correctly due to this widespread fascination with texting?

"Yo.  Eye wanna say wuz up 2 all me homeez @ skool.  U R all gr8!  O, n Nick iz 2 hotttt."

Ugh.  Go to a grammar class, people!   >:(

Could it be cheaper to text than talk?  I know many of my Spanish friends due this because it's cheaper....just a thought.

I still find people talking in loud voices into their cell phones far more annoying.  Like I need to know about your self important business deal that can't be that important if you think the entire airport needs to know.

My favorite was sitting at Applebees one day when all four people sat eating dinner together talking on cell phones to other people.   ::)

And yes lola spelling is going a bit wacky.  My EFL students were always trying to put things like U R, gonna and wanna in their essays.  If the Spice Girls said it it MUST be a word.

Sorry topic hijack over.  ;D

Vnice- Yes, I do think its a *tiny* bit cheaper to text then call (from what my English boyfriend has told me.)  ;D

Personally, the amount of texts that Ive seen people do for ONE conversation would equal a quick phone call to just get it all done and over with in one shot.

But again, this is my personal opinion. I am a very impatient New Yorker and if I can do something quicker and easier for myself (like calling instead of pressing silly buttons for 1/2 the day) then I will do so. When I walk around Manhattan you see LOTS of people using cell phones- but they are TALKING into them, not pressing buttons.

Just a different culture; whatever blows yer skirt up!  :-*

I love text!  ;D
It spares you listening to someone else's crap conversation... if they are texting, they are usually quiet!

Well, I have to agree about the whole mobile phone scene being a bit TOO MUCH! They are handy...butt...

About texts...I use them when I know the other person can't pick up and talk (like honey in a meeting,) butt only send a few now and then. Not so special when you overdose!

Plus, I am just too slow (and how can I run this way and that after the twins when it takes me 5 minutes to write one text?!)
