My Mommy Loves Me! (A Frito Story)
« on: April 24, 2004, 05:57:03 PM »
I just wanted to post and gloat a bit.  My mom went home from her visit with me and the very next day she posted me three bags of Fritos.  It took bloomin' forever for them to arrive but I am *SO* having Frito pie this week!   In fact, I think I'll even make it with the Velvetta she brought over with her.   ;D

This is the first 'care package' I've gotten from home since I moved here three years ago, so I'm a little bit excited and just had to share.  :)

I wonder what the most long-awaited food item you all have gotten excited about?  Anybody surprised you with anything?

OH!  I know.   :)  I asked my Mom to bring twinkees, well she didn't bring twinkees, she brought something better!  Little Debbie's Chocolate and Peanut Butter Wafers!  My favorite.  How pleased was I?  Well, she brought them with her three weeks ago-and I just ate the last one from a box of six today!!! :)  I really  made them last.

Another time, someone who works at the same place as I, but that I don't know very well brought me a package of mint oreos.  That really made me smile.   :)

Awwww Wishstar! Care packages are the best! It's about time you got one! Fritos...mmm...I think I'm going to have to have a bit of those when we go to NY  next week hehe

I think my favourite care package items were the Halloween orange oreos and the cinnamon tic tacs that my friend Heather brought me when they visited. She baffled me...it was in that same package that she brought me 3 of everything on my toiletry list that I'd asked her to get me one of! (I was going to pay her but she refused!)

Velveeta....how much do I want some velveeta mac and cheese right now??

You're more than welcome Caitlinn!  My husband doesn't seem to quite grasp the glory that is a Frito Pie, the poor thing.  I'm sure we'll have plenty!  :)  And you know, that stuff doesn't save very well so I may just have to be a big pig and eat it all in one go.  Life is so hard!   ;)

You know we really should have a big UKY pot-luck dinner with all this American food we all hord and hide in this country.  Share the fun, I say!   ;D

I'll bring my velvetta and you bring your cinamon tic tacs, Jen!  That friend of yours is an angel!!  How sweet of her to go to all that expense and trouble.  Has she lived outside the US before?  Sometimes I think people just don't *get it* how important these little luxuries can be to us until they've been away and experience the lack of them too.

Hey I've got a very close family friend based at Lakenheath and I hear tell that there is a Taco Bell there!  Anyone with a car wanna take a road trip with me?!  We can load up the boot with bean burritos and be back into London by nightfall.   ;D

My most-missed thing is high-end bourbon, which unfortunately is not a care-package item.  :(

Also, though, Hidden Valley Buttermilk Recipe.  I was just in the States for ten days and went to every supermarket I could find, and NO ONE carried it.  <sigh>

I've never tried them, but this place seems to sell BBQ or tomato flavoured Fritos...  they're located in Maidenhead.

Hey Emily...I'm almost positive our Kroger here in town carries it. Unless of course they've suddenly stopped carrying it now and only carry the regular recipe stuff. I'll have a look next I'm there and if they have it I'd be happy to send some over to you. :)

Unfortunatly, you can't send NY pizzas and bagels to England so I didnt have any food sent to me. :) Luckily, I dont have a sweet/salty tooth so there wasnt anything at home I missed except our wonderful restaurants! Other then that, I was content with British grocery stores & natural food shops....and my wonderful 'amateur chef' boyfriend!   :-*

Would someone tell me exactly what a Frito pie is?  I'm dreadfully ignorant of such a thing!

A Frito Pie is a delicious concoction of fritos, layered with refried beans and cheese.  Sometimes people put chili and taco meat on them as well, and they are usually eaten with liberal amounts of sour cream and salsa.  Absolute heaven.  :)
