Problems with abbey help?
« on: April 07, 2008, 11:10:09 AM »
my partner opened an account and applied for a loan with Abbey bank and loan. The account was approved with like a overdraft of 300 pounds and the loan was not.  We got the information on the accounts in the mail and my partners name was spelled wrong so we thought that this was the reason why.  We went into the bank and told them and they said they would look into it and give us a call which never happened.  Then we received a letter stating that the process of transfering his account to abbey was progress.  So we called and told them we didnt want to transfer funds to abbey and they told us there was nothing they could do since it has already started.

We dont know what to do his typical overdraft is around 3000 (approved) and now we have to settle to 300?  We think it has to do with the misspelling of his name even the papers said they couldn't find a credit history for him.

What is the easiest way to stop this process? Can they really do this? We are hoping that his bank will not approve since his name is incorrect?

Do you mean the account from his old bank is being transferred to Abbey? I would send a letter (send it recorded delivery) immediately saying you don't wish to go ahead with it. If you put it in writing they have to comply.

What I don't understand is how they can go ahead with when they have the wrong name and we have complained about it.  They couldnt find any credit history on him because of this...

Either to the local branch where you applied, or if they have a customer complaints departent you could send it there. If you hand deliver it make sure you get something from them saying they've received it (you could get them to date stamp and sign a photocopy maybe?).

By the way, about the credit check ... I think they go by the address as well as the name so if it was only a minor misspelling it may not have made any difference.  Maybe one of our banking experts will know.

Thanks for your help just a question is it worth it telling his current bank about this and telling them not to accept it when it comes in?  I am hoping they won' approve it because the name is incorrect in the first place what do you think?

About the account going by the address I thought the same thing but his overdraft proteciton was only approved for 300 pounds and his other bank approved it for 3000 pounds.  Which doesnt make any sense and also on the letter talking about transferring the account to them it even stated that they could not find a credit history? strange

While you are checking on the amount of overdraft make sure to check on the interest rate on the overdraft; they may have changed this without your knowledge as well.

Getting credit today is not the same as it was a year ago.  Most banks are clamping down on not only mortgages but other credit products as well, that may explain the drop in your approved overdraft.

Most banks won't give big overdrafts to new customers until they have held the account for at least three months.
