Plus, the eighteen year old lives on cheese on toast and she's always setting things alight.  This would take that fear away. :)

We've gone through two micro/grill combi's over the past three years. The grill always breaks! This time we just bought a normal microwave and use the range grill.

There are variations in the grill arrangement.   Some combination units just have a top element like a conventional grill on a stove while others also have one or more side-mounted elements to give a more even distribution of radiant heat, often referred to as the browning function or something similar on the control panel.

Some designs do seem prone to the quartz halogen elements burning out in rather a short time though.

I have one like Rachee's - I've only used the oven facility for making jacket potatoes but it does them really nice and in a fraction of the time than a conventional oven

I don't have one, but DH & I agree that we want to get one.   ;D  Mostly because the grill on our oven takes forever to heat up, plus it'll only work when the glass safety lid is open (such a drag when our kitchen is so small and space is a premium).  Hope those reasons help to justify it to your OH.   ;)
