Romantic Holiday Ideas
« on: April 08, 2008, 01:53:09 PM »
DH and I would love a holiday in the late summer to celebrate our anniversary.

We would love somewhere scenic, close to hiking and rock climbing, but that also has a hint of romance.

Somewhere in the UK would be great, but, France is also a consideration.

Nice, France. It is gorgeous, romantic, and the outskirts of the city are perfect for hiking and rock climbing!!!
I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

Roman Camp Hotel in Callander.  Loads of climbing possibilities and quite possibly the most romantic place i've ever seen (we didn't stay over, just lunch, but had a look in some of the rooms which were just gorgeous!)

Pitlochry and surrounding areas.  I love it there (it's where we were married too).  Mountains, forrests, waterfalls, quaint towns.  It really is lovely.

I know this isn't France or the U.K., but if you're willing to go a bit further Crete is fantastic. We were there last September for our anniversary, and it was fabulous. Lots of great stuff to do, and what could be more romantic than the Mediterranean?

the isle of wight is great for walking. i reccommend bembridge where you can rent a house boat, cottage or beach chalet. good base to explore rest of the island especially by bike, foot.

I'll also put in my vote for Cornwall. DH and I spent our first U.K. holiday together there. There are lots of hiking opportunities, especially near the Penzance/Porthcurno area, and the scenery is absolutely stunning.

I haven't actually been there myself, but it's fairly near here and, from what people say, it's sort of comparable to Centreparc or something like that. If that's true, I wouldn't recommend it for a romantic holiday.  :-\\\\

How about the north Antrim coast and glens in NI? The scenery is spectacular, there are loads of hiking opportunities, and I wouldn't be surprised if there's rock climbing. Glenarm is the prettiest little picture-postcard village--I'd love to stay there someday. There's even a castle! ;D Dunluce Castle and the Giant's Causeway are fab, and Portrush has some gorgeous beaches.

Or, also in NI, Dundrum is a lovely little village (also with a castle) just north of Newcastle. It's right on the coast and also next to the Mourne Mountains. Plenty of hiking there! The view from Dundrum Castle is one of my all-time favourites. Gorgeous.

Arrochar in Scotland. We got engaged there - gorgeous and a great B&B on the edge of the loch.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

What a super thread!  I'm bookmarking this one for future reference.

My own vote for romantic ambience in the late summer would invariably go to Grindelwald.

It's not in England, but the British were largely (in fact entirely) responsible for building it up and developing it during the Victorian era.  So popular was it at the time that Arthur Conan Doyle had Sherlock Holmes die there.

We went to the Lake District for our honeymoon (might be a bit crowded in late summer though).  Stayed at the Howbeck in Windermere http://www.howbeck.co.uk/ and it was absolutely fab!

I agree that the Lake District is lovely and would definitely fulfill your requirements of romance and good walks. I've stayed a couple of times at Ees Wyke Country House and it's fantastic. It was also Beatrix Potter's family's holiday home before she moved permanently to Hill Top Farm, which is a quick walk up the road.
