Oooo, Chary, that is lovely!  *adds it to her list of places to go*

We have decided to go to France because I have never been to the continent and we tend to take loads of daytrips around the UK (but have a big climbing holiday already planned in Wales). The question is: where in France?

We are thinking about Brittany because it is incredibly historic and surrounded by beautiful seascapes and there is some climbing in the area.  Has anyone been to Brittany?  Any suggestions on where to stay?  We will only be going for about 4 days or so.

The west coast of Ireland.  There's some great walking around Slieve League or the Cliffs of Moher - wonderful rocky coastline....and archaeology  ;)
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

I agree....i have been there twice..especially Elounda.......very traditional....romantic...especially the fish restaurants at the harbour! Stay away from Malia tho....its like a mini Ibiza.....

I know this isn't France or the U.K., but if you're willing to go a bit further Crete is fantastic. We were there last September for our anniversary, and it was fabulous. Lots of great stuff to do, and what could be more romantic than the Mediterranean?

we went camping in Glastonbury.....not during the festival tho!.....stayed in a fab campsite (no not a hippy site) ..really cheap..very clean and beautiful country surroundings..run by a sweet little couple from a old country house....you can take your dogs...there is a private walk to the Tor from the campsite..there is a little lake nearby......you can venture into Glastonbury town and laugh at the hippies or check out all the little funky ethnic shops...see the cathedral...or you can get in your car and visit Weston Super Mere beach....

One night we sat outside our tent and chilled out with candles and beer and listened to a Van Morrison concert that was a few fields away but you could hear van the man crystal clear......very very cool experience...

People there are friendly.....we shared a beer with our neighbors (who were professional campers and they seemed to have been everywhere!)

Here is the campsite...

Nice, France. It is gorgeous, romantic, and the outskirts of the city are perfect for hiking and rock climbing!!!

 ;)  ;D

I hope you guys find somewhere perfect!
I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

Brittany or Normandy are gorgeous. Mont St Michel is definitely worth a visit... well the actual place is a tourist trap but the drive there and seeing it appear as you drive closer is almost magical... or maybe that was the lack of sleep from the overnight ferry in Cherbourg?  :P Way more impressive than the one in Cornwall.

The food was the best I've had in ages! Not to mention the stuff the French know how to do to make alcohol out of apples.

If you are going to France for the first time, just about ANY place has something interesting or a romantic locale.

If you're driving, I can add the small tip that Crystal d'Arques has a factory outlet just off the E15 leaving Calais and the prices are about 1/3 what it costs here.
