Sick hubby
« on: April 11, 2008, 12:28:43 PM »
My husband ate a disgusting, greasy, meaty pizza on Tues night. Since Wed he's been suffering with fever, diarrhea accompanied by terrible cramps. I've been forcing liquids on him but it comes out as fast as it goes in. He's very weak and can barely get his head up off the pillow. Yesterday I called NHS Direct since our surgery was closed. The nurse said to continue with fluids and paracetamol. Today at 5am his abdomen pain was so bad I called our surgery emergency number and was told a doctor would call us back. 30 mins later a nurse called and said he should take ibuprofen and keep pushing fluids. I made him force down a cookie before taking the ibuprofen so it wouldn't irritate his stomach. He slept for two hours and woke up feeling the same. I called the GP this morning and took him in. The GP said he shouldn't be taking ibuprofen and gave him a prescription for his cramps and told him it's viral and it has to run it's course. The thing is even with the meds the GP perscribed the pain he's experiencing is very bad and I'm wanting to take him to the A&E but of course he won't go. I'm just worried there may be something underlying here the doctor can't see. I just don't know what to do. I'm leaving for the US in ten days and I'm desperately trying to keep everyone healthy but I'm very worried the whole house is going to get sick.
Anyway if it's some sort of food poisoning which is quite possible since he's the only one who at that garbage...can we catch it from him ? I guess what I'm asking is if food poisoning is strictly a food-borne illness or can it be transmitted through the air?

I'm not an expert but I don't think food poisoning is catching.  However, if it's viral it might be. Sending you all healthy vibes!

If you press on his abdomen, does he have rebound pain (ie it hurts when you stop pressing)?  If so, it could be the appendix. And if he does have the pain, get thee to A&E ASAP!!!

I could be wrong, but I think if he'd come down with some kind of food poisoning because of what he ate on Tuesday, it'd be long gone by now.

I think chary is right about that. Whatever it is, I hope he feels better soon!

Well the GP tends to think it's viral which scares the hell out of me. I've bleached the kitchen counters and the entire bathroom and I'm using toilet paper or my elbow to flush!

The GP palpitated his abdomen and found out where he was sorest. I guess he would know then if it were appendix, yes?

Yes that's what I thought also. He's had bouts of this sickness before but it's never lasted this long.

Thanks. I'm making some "Jewish Penicillin" right now for him to sip later.  ;) Oy, he's such a kvetch!  ::)

I would think so.  Wouldn't hurt to try again, though.  Sometimes, GP's miss things (not trying to scare you--just my experience).  If it hurts when you are actually pushing down, then I wouldn't worry about it being the appendix.  Good luck!  Sending healing vibes your way!

The 'vomiting bug' is still going around (and around) - my husband had it twice (!!) this month. Vomiting and the runs, and cramping. It depends on which one you get, but it can last from 1 day to a number of them. Keep the fluids going, stay off the ibruprofen (it can irritate the stomach and may have done so, you have to take it with food and if he couldnt keep anything down...), parecetamol for pain is alright. If it doesn't appear to clear up keep in touch with your GP or go to ER if needed. But this sort of thing is doing the rounds.

We had that stomach bug a couple of weeks ago and it's been going around work.  Sickness accompanied by really bad stomach cramps.  So, the doctors probably right.

What follows is gross: Food poisoning or a virus is catching because of not washing your hands.  If the germs get on your hands through um, pooh or vomit-which they will- and you don't wash them and then touch something then the next person to touch them will pick up the germs and if they touch their mouth be passed on to themselves.  If they touch food and then someone eats the food that is one of the ways that food poisoning starts. Wash your hands, people.

Well I've been washing and washing hands and kids and fixtures for the past few days but I have a 6 year old and a 3 year old who constantly have hands in their mouth! Im constantly tell these boys "Keep your hands out of your mouth and nose!!"

Another reason I felt it could be food poisoning is (GROSS COMING UP...) The first time he went to the bathroom I went in immediately after and it smelled worse than anything I've ever smelt. Like rotting flesh or something very rotton. I gagged and ran out and went to find some Lysol.  [smiley=puke.gif]

Sorry to hear it, pebs.. I was thinking the same thing about germs spreading.. and the appendix thing but if they seem ok with it.. then I guess it is fine.. Then again.. I've had  'wrong' info  so if you are really concerned  ask another doc.. Trust your gut.. It never fails..

Thanks, M. My gut says it's food poisoning but today he's still not well so maybe I'm wrong. He hasn't had a morsel of food in four days and today I gave him a very small piece of toast and he seemed to perk up a bit but for the most part he's being a huge baby!

Wow, I'm sorry for your husband and I hope the whole family doesn't get this, whatever it is.

Could be rotavirus?  Memorable for the foul smelling poo. :( In fact, when a family gets rotavirus often the whole house gets that smell - sometimes doctor's office gets the smell too if there is an outbreak.  Really bad cramps and vomiting with that one too.
