I think maybe it's just the people you're around who do that, not just a specifically UK thing.

I've never heard any of those names in any country. I do kinda like the way they drop the 'arry' in a name and just add 'z'. Garry=Gaz, Barry=Baz, Sherry=Shaz, etc. Or even better when they add 'azza' ..Gazza, Bazza, Shazza.

The kids in my son's Year 6 class at school seem to do the rhyming thing.  I haven't heard any adults doing it though.

The nicknames I like are the ones where the person is called by their profession.  They specifically do this in the village where my husband grew up in Devon.  I'm not sure if they do it everywhere. For example, the carpet layer is called Vic the Carpet.

I have always had a rhyming nickname from my family. I think it's a fruit thing. Everyone I know with 'ana' at the end of their name in the US is automatically linked with 'banana'.

I don't know anyone with a rhyming nickname, but I can't stand how people shorten names. My housemate is friends with Becks, Mich (pronounced Meesh and drives me nuts), Shev, and Kath. I worked with Kat (in fact I know a few of them) and I've met Rodge, and Kev.  :-\\\\

Wow..at my old job...everyone was called DOC...probably because we were a group of army medics...but you kind of had to earn the title DOC...you couldn't be just any guy from any unit. You had to prove yourself and earn the soldiers trust and respect.
I have been called DOC or Doc KB everywhere I have ever been. It has carried on into my normal life as well.

I haven't really noticed people being given rhyming nicknames in the UK (I'm a Brit), but it's pretty common for guys to be called by their last name (or an abbreviation of it), at least by other guys, anyway.

Having said that though, last year when I was doing my MSc, my friends gave each other nicknames that were unique to our friendship (i.e. we were the only people who used those nicknames for each other - no one else had a clue what they signified). Actually, also when I was about 10, my younger brother gave me a silly nickname that just kind of stuck - my whole family still calls me by the nickname 15 years later (even my aunt who lives on a different continent!).

That's funny, I didn't think about it being an England thing until this thread, but Dave and his best friend both have nicknames.
