My husband plays rugby. He trains twice a week and plays a full match every saturday. Every week he comes home literally covered in contusions, cuts and scrapes. In the four years we've been married, he's had three trips to the hospital: broken arm, and gashes to his head requiring stiches (twice). He also had metal pins in his wrist and a permanently damaged ring finger on his left hand from previous injuries. And this is a man who boasts that he's never had a 'serious' injury!! One of the guys on another local team received a severe neck injury quite recently, and will probably never walk again.

It's dangerous. There's no getting around it. I do not enjoy seeing my husband come home every week looking like he's been in a war. However, I do believe that it can be a very positive influence in a boy's life. My husband thanks rugby for giving him discipline, keeping him fit, and keeping him away from drugs at a time of his life when alot of his friends were bored and experimenting. Even now that he's playing a little less seriously, it still does him a world of good - he's very fit, he gets to see his mates every week, and I honestly believe it is a brilliant outlet for aggression - a milder and gentler group of men you will not find!

A good rugby coach will train the young lads how to safely take impact, how to fall, etc to reduce the risk of injury. But there's always a chance, I'm afraid.
Ok, so I'm smug.

My teen boys play rugby and there seems to be an injury of some sort almost every game, sometimes lots of blood and sometimes not.  My son had to have physio for 3 months on his shoulder.
My husband tells me the saying is that rugby is a hoodlums games played by gentlemen and football (soccor) is a gentlemens game played by hoodlums.

I know that saying with the word 'thugs'.

darksquid - won't your level of injury really depend on what position you are playing?  I mean, I have never seen a prop without a cauliflower ear or a fat lip (at the very least) but if you are a scrum/fly half or back I thought that you are probably going to be comparatively injury free.

BTW, I assume we are talking about rugby union, here?

Yeah, I think you're right - there seem to be certain positions more prone to injury than others. My husband received most of his injuries as a prop, but now that he plays second row he still comes home a mess. His fast little fly half or scrum half mates don't seem to get it half as bad.

I'm talking about rugby union... not sure about the others!

So then I can just let my nephew know it is a bit rougher than american football!
I don't really know the rules, positions or anything...Would like to try it though.

I used to play until I tore my ACL (knee)...it was damn painful to play - you get hit by full weight players and you don't have pads to protect you (I was one of the small fast ones getting hit by the big ones).  But darn fun!
