Has anyone been to Turkey? We are considering taking a quick break next month and just checking out the late deals and a lot seem to be for Turkey. After a quick google, I realized that Americans need a visa to visit Turkey but it said it can be purchased at the port of entry. Do you just show up and ask for a visa? Is it that easy?  ???

Has anyone been? Any advice? Liked it? Hated it? Any advice would be awesome  :D
I'm thinking about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'll be worth it.

We went to Turkey in April last year.  To be honest we only booked it because it was a cheap deal, I had no desire to go to turkey whatsoever...but we loved it.

We were in a resort called Alanya/Antalya (one or the other but they're both in the same area).  The weather was fantastic, loads of day trips available through the holiday company but we often just hopped on a bus or went walking (and a camel once!) and hoped for the best.

The people were really really amazing, they were always trying to drag you in to buy from them, but in a nice way, we had loads of apple tea this way and they didn't mind if you didn't buy at all, but they were really friendly and chatty.  I would say that this is the countries best asset (aside from the weather, scenery and beaches).

The only bad for us was that we went all inclusive and the food was shocking...being in a resort we were sort of trapped but we did make it out to the local town for some decent food every couple of days.

As for the visa, you need one to travel to Turkey on a british passport too, so we both needed one.  But this was all handled by our travel agent and I think (trying hard to remember) we just handed it over with our passport when we arrived...I certainly can't remember paying when we got to the airport.

I would recommend it for a late deal.

I went to Turkey in 97 so this might be out of date, but I don't think it is.

Basically, it is like customs here, go through the gates, see the IO and you pay for your visa as you go through.  Not a problem, but I seem to remember something about it being better in US dollars.  That probably has changed.

I visited Turkey in 2000 and it was fantastic! Loved the food, the people, the sights and the weather. Def want to go back one day. We got our visas through the consulate in the US.

Have fun! :)

We went to Turkey last summer. It's just as Bookgrl says, as you go through the lines before customs, there is a line to buy it...it is just a stamp (like a postal stamp) they stick in your passport. When we went, you had to pay in US dollars if a US passport and GBP if British. I would check the consulate site to see. I remember needing to have exact amount of money too, they didn't deal with change.
