UK Telephone Codes
« on: April 28, 2004, 07:18:30 PM »
Anyone a whiz with the telephone service codes? Are there any more than these?

999 - Emergency Services

1471- Last number calling and return call
118500 - Directory Assistance
1571 - BT Answering Service (free!)

When getting a busy/engaged signal, press 5 for Ringback - it will ring you back when the line is free, up to 45 minutes.

LOL, thanks Broxi! ;) That just reminded me that I thought there used to be a wake up call service too, do they still do that?

Leah, both me and my DH vaguely remember some sort of alarm call service from the dim and distant past... we dont know if it's still going or not, nor can we recall the number... sorry!  But  I'm sure i used it once, many many moons ago.

141 Do NOT display my number on "call return" (prefix)
144 BT Credit card call (prefix)

150 BT Customer Services (Residential)

155 Operator (International Calls)

If your phone service is with NTL, 150 will also get you NTL's customer service.

Haha.. the speaking clock.  I don't know why but I got the BIGGEST kick out of this when Sean told me about it.  I'll deny having said this later.. but I also managed to download a .wav of it off the web   :-[   ;D

That number may be wrong in some parts of the country. In the west, that's the number for directory enquiries.

Yeah, Im sure it's potentially a different number in different parts of the country, as you said.
I grew up in California... 5551212 was the speaking clock, and 411 was directory enquiries (for Pacific Bell), if i remember correctly...  But i havent lived there for nearly 20 years, so i may be mistaken!

In all the states I've lived in on the east coast 555-1212 AND 411 are both directories.  I don't think I've ever heard a speaking clock.

There was a speaking clock - Time and Temperature - in the US, but damned if I can remember the number!

Our local one was run by a local bank, they got their ad blurb in before the time and temp. I seem to remember having a weatherline as well, run by a local AM radio station. Those were handy back in the day.
