Every time I drink something with high fructose corn syrup, I end up with a UTI. So I try to avoid all sodas other than the occasional diet coke while I'm in the states. But I've noticed when I'm in other countries I can drink all the coke/fanta I want and it doesn't bother me.

I'm not buying the same compound, different water line. I think there is too much of a taste difference for it to be just that. I mean, water in various areas of the US is different, wouldn't we notice that here in the States if that was the case?

Assuming the ingredients are actually the same as listed, I guess its formulated differently.

They might use the SAME ingredients, but different amounts/combos of the ingredients.

I've been thinking about this from the point of view of someone who hardly ever drinks coke but does drink beer (in case you didn't know!), and there is a comparison (no, really)...

Take Guinness.  Until last year, Guinness was brewed in three places in the world - Dublin, Park Royal in North West London, and Nigeria.  I've never had Nigerian Guinness, but Dublin and London Guinness did taste different, despite having the same ingredients and the same brewing technique - the only difference was water from the Liffey or water from an underground spring.

Also, Youngs beer which was previously brewed in Wandsworth is now brewed in Bedford.  It has the same ingredients, the same brewing process, they have even moved the Master Brewer up to make sure that they have recreated the original taste...but no matter what they do, they can't get it to taste the same.  Something is always different, no matter how hard they try.

Coke could be the same.

Good point Vicky. Guiness is different outside Dublin. Personally, it's lovely in Dublin. It's smooth and almost sweet. I love it. Outside Dublin, I don't like it. I do think the water has a lot to do with brewing processes and why wouldn't Coke do the same

Just came across this article this morning and while it talks about pizza and dough, it does give a hint of how important water actually is to taste of things.

No wonder the Brits have such rotten teeth if their Coke is flavoured with sugar :D

Look, I realise that you're probably just trying to wind people up, but I think you'll find most people feel it's a little dull and serves no purpose whatsoever.... It's really not even all that funny.  [smiley=sleeping2.gif]

I've actually not noticed the difference.  I never really drank much regular Coke in the US, but I drink more of it here.  I usually buy cans from the student union shop at school because I prefer it to Pepsi, which a lot of people seem to drink here.

I never really disliked Coke in the US.  I'm more of a Diet Coke girl than anything else, but the differences don't bother me.  I guess it just depends on your taste buds.
The chances are there's a reason we've been left here, but I'm not disappointed.  - Idlewild

What do you think of Diet Coke US vs Diet Coke UK?
